excessive black smoke
I have 96' F250 7.3 PSD with 192,000 mi. Recently I have been noticing something wierd happening. As I am driving along and doing about 1600 to 1900 RPM I am noticing a very different sound (not normal to me) with the exhaust. ( this is hard to describe in words) It changes sound to a very deep bass tone but I have noticed when this happens Lots of black smoke come from the exhaust. This happens when you hold the throttle stready but whith slightest increase in throttle it goes away and sounds normal and the exhaust cleans up to normal. I recently installed new IPR, CPS fairly new, new fuel filter and tried different fuels from different places

does it only happy when its cold? if so, may be the exhaust back pressure sensor actuating. it will close until the truck warms up and opens when you accelerate or the truck warms up. im not sure about the black smoke, is your exhaust stock??

ok, try driving with the passenger side window down when its still cold. if the symptoms you describe happen and the exhaust tone you hear kicks in, try accelerating fairly hard. if you hear a whoooshing sound that accompanies a return in the normal exhaust tone and normal performance, its most likely youre ebpv operating.

Try unplugging the EBPV (Exhaust Back Pressure Valve) connection under the turbo (two wire connection). Then drive the truck and see if the problems gone. If so, yoiu just fixed the problem. If not, you eliminated one thing. Let us know what happens.
