Hi Tradesman! Welcome to FTE.
Low coolant will also cause the symptoms you desribe. Before you replace the T-stat, top off the coolant. If you still get overheating and cold air, the T-stat needs replacing. If everything is normal you get to find a coolant leak.

fill up the coolant then test the system, give it time to work the air out. If coolant doesn't touch the thermostat a new wont work either. Get a heavy duty or motorcraft, they seem to yeild the best results (if you have to replace the unit)
