solid cam questions...

Hey guys. long time no talk.... I need some expert advice. I'm going to run the comp 282S in my 390 and need to know if there's any mods I need to make to run the mechanical cam in a hydraulic block? Also, what jet do most of you guys run in your heads to restrict that oil passage?

I've never worried about the head mod before but since it's a mechanical cam and in a complete toy vehicle, I got a feeling it's gonna see extended high rpm's...

Well you'll need adjustable rockers to set the lash, the most common jet sizes are from .060" to .090" Dia. hole.... Proper spring rate for the cam... Just off the top of my head..Good luck..

got the rockers and matching cam springs, I'm thinking #80 jets.... I hear if I run shell lifters I don't have to worry about blocking the lifter galley's.. that true?

I believe you will have to do some modifications to the oil galleries in the block to run a solid lifter cam in the block you are using.

Some guys block the lifter oil passages. The original solid lifter cam FE blocks don't have the lifter oil passages drilled. They oil by splash. Some guys leave the passages open on hyd blocks using a solid lifter. Seems to be a 50/50 reason of why or why not and I'm sure you'll get both sides. I've run them blocked and un blocked with NO issue. My Genesis block is set up for solids and it's only partially restricted. That's how Keith Craft likes to set them up for soild tappet or rollers.

I've read that the 'dumb bell' style factory lifters can cause loos of oil pressure when the lifter is all the way down- but the 'shell' style lifter is a drop in replacement as it is machined and manufactured to the hydraulic lifter specs so it doesn't create a loss of pressure... anyone else hear of this?

I dont restrict the oil to the rockers like everyone else does. I run a lot out on the street and like to keep my valve springs as cool as possible (I feel on a solid roller, it is a must for oil). But you can run a restriter if you like. You can restrict the oil galley to the lifters as well.

Remember to use oil that has zinc in it and if not. Then buy a Break in additive for the oil. JMO

Yeesh by the time I see it...

They got it covered. If it was me I'd leave the block unmodified and run shell lifters. That way there will be a little more oiling for the cam, which I think we can all agree is a good thing.

Yeap seems all the items have been cover. But i will throw my two cents in. I am running a solid flat tappet cam and yes i did block off the oil galleries on the block. But it is a 50/50 idea I have heard guys use shell lifters(have to use longer pushrods) and I have heard guys use dumbell lifters without doing the block restrictions. BUT comp cam has a solid lifter that is made just like a hydraulic lifter. I think??? Seems someone told me this while i was building my engine.

thanks guys.. I'll check the comp cams part for lifters and see what comes up... Now to narrow down between the two profiles... comp 282s or the lunati dual pattern with .560 ish intake/ .577 ish exhaust lifts.....

Well you might not have to use a split pattern cam, if you have any good port work on your heads..

I'll be running a single pattern and the rule of thumb is the exhaust should flow 75% of what the Intake will do..and Mine with the ported heads will be 79% of the intake with a single pattern cam...

just something alot of people dont think about.. JMO!!!!

If you give me the rest of the engine specs, I'd be glad to run it through Desktop Dyno and see what works best.
