I've got a '92 F150XLT, 4.9 4spd w/od, with only 104,000miles. pretty much all stock minus the dual glasspacks. (Im 18, i like it loud) It was a good truck to learn how to drive stick with and the clutch seemed to take the beating, but now a few months down the road its starting to slip a bit, the clutch has never been replaced and I'm looking for a decent clutch assembly that will take a good beating. Since I've bought the truck its had its fare share of abuse including a tug-o-war contest with an s-10. (you gotta try it sometime, good laughs)
I have also installed a 1200watt system replacing the back seat, and for a while enjoyed my headlights dimming as the bass pounded behind me, but now its just obnoxious, advice on cheap high amp alternators would be greatly appriciated.
Have you thought of saving money and looking for a lightning cap, large capacitor to store energy, that can save amps between bass thumps. There is going to be no such thing as a cheap high amp alternator. Your local Autozone or NAPA should have prices on a 110 amp alt for your truck. If not you can try JEGS or Summit racing. Both have online websites. Even with a new high amp alt you will still have lights dimming at idle. Trust me I speak from expierence. I ended up buying a cap for my bass system.
If your alternator looks like this with an external fan visible, you are in luck. This is the 2G alternator and depending on the specific model, it is rated around 60-75 amps max. This one is also known as the "flaming Ford alternator". Has been know to cause vehicle fires and even an occassional house and garage fire.
Many guys have upgraded to the 3G. The 3G is plentiful in the junkyards if you want to go cheap, or from any auto parts store. The output is normally rated at 130 amps max, but at idle speeds, it produces nearly as much as the max rating for the 2G, and it eliminates the plastic plug that has started so many fires.
Do a seach both in this forum, the electrcial forum, and on Google, for 3G alternator upgrade, and you will be reading for many hours.
Come on back with specific questions.
Good luck Frank
