I am on my 4th F150 starting back in 1996 and with regular maintenance I have had zero defects or repairs sans tire/brake replacement. With a record like that why would I buy anything else.
06 XLT, Scab 4X4 with 2500 miles. Only annoying problem I'm having is a squeaky ashtray/cup holder. I guess the 5.4 engine tick is normal but everything else is working as advertised.
'07 F-150 with a whopping 500 miles on it already and no problems. Got a little clutch chatter in first gear but I suspect the yard apes at the dealership glazed the clutch moving it around. I observed them abusing the vehicles when I was buying my truck - high-rev take-offs and wheel-spinning. The idiot salesman just laughed it off.
06 Lariat SCrew with 4k miles, no problems, very quiet and solid ride. The only thing that has me concerned is the dreaded spark plug tsb issue, but I'm not losing sleep over it. It is a very well designed, truck and I am impressed. Even little details like the large size of filler hole for the window washer which makes it easier to fill has me impressed, and the tailgate lift assist! So far it's my favorite truck, and I've had Dodge, Chevy, and this is my first Ford!
ran the scab to 36,000 and the only thing I really had happen was a rear door speaker go dead...the radio dude replaced the head-unit and the speaker...then had the battery go kaput...all was replaced no problem. 'Course, I had to burn a half-day for each issue...they could have just given me the damn parts and I could have done it myself....been running okay so far...but the brakes are about to drive me batty with that demonic squeaking....
I've had it back twice because of the clunking of the rear. I told them of the TSB for limited slips, and they claim the TSB is not for that. So - the first time they said nothing is wrong and lubed the slip yoke. The second time they replaced the driveshaft - and it still clunks.
Then, I had a clicking in driver side front when I went to full lock to the right. I told them it sounded like the splines in the front. The first time they said there's nothing wrong and couldn't duplicate it - but it still clicked. How hard is it to go to full lock and drive? It did it all the time for me!! Then I brought it back, and they said there was a bracket loose up front - BULLS#IT !! I've been around long enough to know the difference between the sound of a loose bracket and a spline or bearing click. It still does it, but not as bad.
So - today, there was snow on the ground - enough to use 4 Hi. I put it in and started up the road. Hmmm - 4wd light is on, I heard T-case engage, but I'm making no progress, and only rear wheels are spinning!! I stick my head out the window to see if I can get a look at the front wheel - it's not spinning, and I hear the clicking again!! Good friggin job Mr Ford Tech!!
Geez - I wonder if it's related to the paragraph above!! I even told them it sounds like splines when I had it for previous issue.
So - it's back to the shop again for the 4WD. Not to mention the other night the driver window stuck and wouldn't go up for a few secs.
I'm fed up to the point that I was thinking of trading it in for something without a blue oval on it!! That's a shame, because I've probably owned 25 cars, and most of them have been Fords. I have four Ford products right now - 2 classic Cougars and a '95 Cougar (Mercury), plus the F150, and I just sold a Bronco with 130k on it last week.
I *think* I still love my truck - but I'm getting fed up with this stuff.
Ford man since 1986 - mustang gt. Traded for 97 f150 XLT 4.6 2wd. Drove both very hard with minimal maintenance - zero serious problems and no shop time (except catalytic converter recall on mustang and crappy tires on F150). Current owner 06 F150 XLT 5.4 4WD - 5000 miles - loving every one of 'em . (Knocking on wood)
I missed it when I picked the truck up and I still have to go in to show then. 5 out of the 6 tie downs on the outside of my flareside box where over tightened and cracked. I have 23k Km so far and I have never used those tie downs as of yet. Other then that i think it's perfect. Apart from the hugh dent I put in the tailgate, but that was my fault.
rpxr400,
that rearend noise is more than likely the gears in your rear diff. I noticed ours leaking fluid one day. Not enough to hit the driveway; you have to get under and check it. Of course water had gotten in, so they replaced the fluid and resealed it. Maybe a couple of weeks later...back in the shop to replace the rearend gears. Window switches go out often. (I'm beginning to think they're on a timer.) Drink/change tray replaced. Shifting was weird until comp. was "adjusted according to a tsp". Rear driver speaker replaced...etc. I won't get into it all.
Just for ya'll clarification in case these things happen to you; 2005 F-150 w/5.4ltr, posi rear.
2004 STX. Just went over 50K today. Never been in for anything. At around 100 mph relative wind, the mirrors blow back. But it has to be 100+ (ie 70 mph into a 30 mph headwind).
'05 17k, no probs other than paint comin off the emblem and a battery that permanatly died(95% sure it was my fault but still covered under warrantee)
drive like i stole it and it keeps runnin askin for more
Wish I could say I've had no problems, but since I bought an '04 F150 scab XLTwith the 5.4 liter used in March '06 with 18500 miles on it, I've had the following done:
Replaced the cooling fan clutch assembly, idler pulley and serp belt.
Replaced the heater blower motor.
Replaced the driveshaft.
Had to have the passenger side air bag reprogrammed.
Replaced driver power window switch.
Had to have the cennter front seatbelt removed and reinstalled ( it was installed backwards at factory).
These were all done under warranty but still a big pain going to the shop so often. By the way, I've only put 10000 miles on it since buying it. Probably a good thing I purchased an extended warranty. At least it's a good looking truck!
