I bet I've got a decent list to make up here... lets see what I can remember...

Here is my 78, the day I bought it..

This truck has over 400,000 km's on it...
  • Torn up seat, springs sticking out
  • Destroyed steering wheel, cracked enough to rip skin while using it
  • carburetor has zero vacuum lines hooked up
  • hot-air stove supply line bent and not working
  • pass-side valve cover bent up (because it was smashed into the cab upon engine install (351W)
  • cab bent up at the drip rails due to valve cover..
  • Rear main seal leaking
  • Front main seal leaking
  • Power steering pump leaking and un-shimmed to the motor (ran like crap!)
  • alternator not working
  • battery drained and can't hold a charge
  • cab corners are gone
  • Antenna is gone and broken off, so radio doesn't work at all
  • heater is stuck in the "on" position, and won't turn off
  • door corners are gone
  • box corners & fenders are rusted right through
  • Tailgate was smashed in on a rear-end collision
  • rear bumper is also smashed in
  • truck box has a dent in the front, which smashed itself into the cab (P.O. said it was from carrying around the current engine, 351)
  • wires create smoke under the dash because they are running HOT and burning all of the electrical tape under the dash
  • signal lights won't work properly due to a fault in the wiring somewhere down the line
  • drivers side turn signal is stuck in the ON position, and will not turn off
  • Rear sliding window is broken and won't close fully (not good for rainy days lol)
  • Hacked up exhaust with awfully loud glasspacks.... The exhaust doesn't exit under the truck, it exits directly under the cab, so you get a nice exhaust smell when you run the vehicle... very bad for my health...
  • front windshield is cracked enough that you need to pull a ACE-VENTURA and drive with your head out the window
  • Cracked grille insert
  • Dented and mostly destroyed grille shell
  • 2 rear flat tires when bought (had to pump them up and drive home ASAP)
  • Gas tank was nearly rusted through, had about 1/3 tank of varnish in it as well
  • Fuel gauge didn't work, so I put 10 bucks of gas in it and when she started to die, I just stopped and poured more into the tank...
  • Carb jets & fuel filter were full of rust and nearly couldn't get fuel
  • And to top it all off, the P.O. wanted to hide all the rust on the truck, so he painted over the hood, the chrome and each underside of the entire truck (passenger AND driver) with a paint that didn't match anything but his house
I doubt many of you can top that all off... There is even more to list I'm sure, but I've fixed around 1/4 of the problems I've listed.

If anyone has a ride that could be called a P.O.S, it's mine... until she gets fixed.

My 78 F150 that I bought for $450 had the following problems.

Spongy Brakes caused by a bad wheel cylinder and no pad left on the rear drums.

Bad head gasket

Minor rust on floor boards

Broken plastic grill insert

Dent in rear passenger fender

Under performing 400 (aren't they all)

Broken windshield

Didn't have a million dollars stashed under the seat.

Had to pop start the F-350 because the battery was old and wouldn't crank over a High Compression, High Performance 390.
Pushing a vintage F-350 that weighs almost 3 tons through a parking lot on a slope is fun! (Lemme tell ya!)

It was May 1986 and I found this '77 F-150 with 35,000 miles on it, 351M / C-6 / NP 205. It had been originally purchased by an elderly fellow who drove it very little, then he passed away. A local police officer bought it cheap at the estate sale and cleaned it up from sitting so long, the paint had faded so he painted it different, and he added some chrome valve covers, a cheapy air cleaner, and a pair of CherryBombs with side exits and spoked wagon wheels.

Problems?

The original inverted Y steering linkage was bad when it was new and this one had already sloppy tie rod ends and the Cherry Bombs were too loud for the new purchaser, a 32 year old trooper. Got it home and before she left the drive way again she had updated 78/79 style steering from pittman arm to tie rods. First drive was to exhaust shop for a new system with twin lines out the back and two turbo mufflers.

Fuel pump was only held on with one bolt, and decided to go south 2 hours into the 12 hour drive home from North Carolina to Michigan. FYI, the Auto Vantage in Mt. Airy, North Carolina is open on Easter Sundays, and doesn't seem to mind wrenching in the parking lot. <whew>

my 77 f150, when i first go it had the following problems:
-no ignition module
-no trans or t-case (was an original np435 np205 truck, which is what i stuffed under it)
-passenger's side front brake was froze up from sitting
-rust (it made me want to puke a little)
-one of the 35's that it came with was flat (i had to put a 33 on it for the time being)
-no driveshafts
-had trees growing in between the cab and bed (which i had to cut with a sawsall and drove it around with the trunks still in there for a good two years haha)
-shocks were shot
-front coils were shot
-passenger's side leaves were all broken (except the main leaf)
-no dash lights worked
-main seals were shot
-valve covers leaked
-oil pan leaked
-carb had a problem with flooding
-exhaust was rotting away
-muffler didn't muffle anything
-it had a 351m (a problem that will be cured this summer with a freshly rebuilt 71 400)
-the only tranny i had for it had a crack down the side, which got filled with silicone (np435, but is still working good)
-miscellaneous dents

yep. that pretty much sums it up! it also had no oil or coolant in it either. i knew it was meant to be resurrected when i dumped gas in the tank and it didn't leak, and when i hit the key and it actually started. i was one excited 15 year old haha. needless to say, four years of work, i'm pretty happy with the progress, as slow as it is.

I put the exhaust for my 91 Ranger STX on in the O'Reilly's parking lot in the Ironwood, Michigan store. I asked first, and they were all cool with it.
