won't start

I have a early 1999 f350 powerstroke. Won't start. Local mechanic I have looking at it says he can make it run on one side and not the other. Ford garage took me for $400 and told me it would take $2600 to see if they could get to run! They mentioned an injector module and much more.

Well if it really is the IDM then its an expensive fix.
That doesn't make sense if he said it "runs on one side"
Try to get the codes that is is showing, or any other symptoms. It's hard to diagnose from the information provided. What happens when you try to start her?

Sounds like it may be something as simple as an UVC harness coming apart or a VC gasket shorting out.

I think I grow less fond of stealerships with every new post! Hallewhoopie, what in the land of the free WON'T these guys try to get away with?
My bet even WITH the scarce information is on the VC or UVC connections. These cold weather rough idle starts cause a lot of vibration, and a flaky connection could turn faulty

A few times before we couldn't get it started at all, it would lose all power and die. Then it would start right back up. The last time it did start, with much grinding to accomplish this, it ran for about 2 min. , then died just like you turned off key. Definetly not like a fuel problem.

When we try to start her, I'm sure we are getting fuel, because of smoke out of exhaust. Just no fire

Smoke out of the exhaust is not a guarantee that it's getting ALL the fuel it NEEDS, tho. I had one driver who had run OUT of fuel try and start it after pouring in only 4 or 5 gallons, then giving up because he saw black smoke out of the tailpipe but it wouldn't run. Turned out he just hadn't followed the proper procedure to restart it. another, they had towed to the dealership who tried to sell them on everything from an IDM to new paint on the VCs! It turned out to be worn-thru insulation on the wiring harness leading to the large DS connector. Had we let them go ahead and throw parts at it, we'd have spent thousands for what ultimately was a black-tape repair. both produced smoke but wouldnt start.
