tonight i got in my truck to move it so someone could park in front of my house. i started it and as soon as i turned on the headlights they started to blink on and off. then i could smell burning plastic. lloked down and the highbeam switch was glowing so i shut the headlights off and the truck andran in to find a fire exquisher. after everything had calmed down i have got it down to the truck is fine it is when i turn the headlights, something is up with the highbeam switch.
can i just unhook it or will that kill the headlights also. i really don't need them since the regular lights are so bright. thanks
i guess it is not as big a deal as i thought. i called autozone and a new switch is only 6 bucks. and my grandpa said he put one in his boss's truck over the summer and it only took 10 minutes.
no, you can not unhook it till you get a new switch, with the switch unhooked, you will have no headlights at all. you may also have to replace the wiring connector to the switch if it cooked though.
thanks
i got it swithced this morning and everything is fine. took about ten minutes and a philips head screwdriver. the switch is only 5.99 and i now have highbeams.
If it got thay hot I can't beleive didn't melt plug. Mine did ended up replacing it. Just the plastice the wires snap into it. Glad you didn't smoke your truck .
but after i got that replaced i went out to start it and it kept stalling. but luckily i was at home with a piece of wire and some time to spare so i was able to get the code. it was the tps and i figured i would go ahead and change it. it was only $40 so i went home and tryed to find it. on a 351 located on the bottom of the throttle body. so had to take it completely off. no biggie but the lower water line running into the throttle body had seen better days and broke in my hands. well got a new line and my grandpa noticed a hole in the steel line running from right above the coolant temp sensor to that water line. so it is leaking water now faster then i can put it in.
i don't have a problem with putting it in but i hate to go to the dealership to get one. does anyone know if napa or a parts store sell them because a dealership will want an arm and a leg for it.
i don't know if i can because it is part of the fitting that has the coolant temp sensor mounted to it and there is not way to plug it because the little hole is real close to the sensor.
Try a junkyard and get one off one with a totaled engine. My first concern is why there is that much corrosioin on that fitting. The nipples are still shiny under the hoses on my '86 Bird and the tee shows no rust or corrosion whatsoever. Acidic coolant problems maybe? Watch the mix on your coolant while it's leaking. Not enough coolant will allow the water to cause corrosion.
i just bought the truck a couple of weeks ago from a friends dad. i know they owned it from april 99 till i bought it and they only put 20k miles on it so it did alot of sitting on the street. i did go to the dealership today and they wanted $60 for a new one. but i will difinitely go to the junkyard to see if they have one. if it ever stops raining.
