1996 F-250 Question

1996 F-250 Question
I'm new to this forum and have a question. I'm looking at a 96 f-250 tomorrow. Here is the information I have from the owner:
~150,000 miles
- Original 460
- new transmission, less than 1000 miles
- Check engine light is on and truck seems to have no power. Owner claims it won't go much more than 30 mph.
Without knowing anything more about the truck, any thoughts on what the problem might be? If it is something simple like a sensor, then I'm comfortable with it and hopeful of an easy fix. I'm concerned that it may be a transmision problem, possibly the new one wasn't installed correctly. Or something more serious...
Any thoughts/concerns for a newbie are very much appreciated.

if you can "test drive" the truck to a local parts store, most stores will have a obdII tester for vehicles 96 and newer.
if the check engine light is on the computer is storing a trouble code from somewhere, if you like the truck i'd highly recommend having the truck tested to see whats wrong.
