My Friend has a 1990 F-350 Diesel 4x4.
The Automatic transmission works well in 1st and reverse, If you go in drive it slips (takes awhile to get moving). If you manually shift from 1st to drive, 1st is strong, seems like no second and then into drive, fine.
My question is could this be computer problems or just mechanical?
Yes that is the E4OD.... has he replaced anything on the IP like the TPS, on diesels it's called an FIPL. Does the Speedo and tack work flawlessy...... does the OD ON/OFF stalk light flash... Have you had major rain storms or has he been off roading.
I hate to say this but your friend is operating in LIMP MODE second and reverse only..
This is a protective Mode the trans goes into to allow the vehicle to be moved from the highway to a safe place basically. NOT for everyday driving or you will burn up the trans..... if he has not already.
FIPL is Fuel Injection Pump Lever sensor.........
Fix the Tach sender on the oil filler housing....... or at least check the wiring.
The dead tach sender should/would send the automatic trans into a "failure management mode" (limp mode) with harsh engagements and firm shift feel, and an abnormal shift schedule. It has no effect on a manual trans only the Tach readings.
Replace the tach sender on the oil fill housing a big 1" nut with 2 wires. Ford only part Engine RPM sensor E5TZ-17B384-A about $50. You can remove and clean it but usually changed later too. You can test it too, hold it in the air away from ferrous metal, using an ohm meter lead on each wire you need DC resistance between 2000-3000 ohms.
