I am swaping a ford 460 into my 1964 F100 an just hit my first snag. The 302 that i pulled out of the truck was wired with an external solenoid, when i redid the wiring, i went back with that same setup. Trouble is, the starter motor for the 460 (1973 F250) has the solenoid on the storter motor. What do i have to change? Can i get a 460 starter that dosent have the solenoid attached? or how exactly do you wire the 460 starter?
I originally thought that i could reuse the starter from my 302 - it bolts up fine, but the gear dosent disengage enough, and clicks on the flexplate teeth when it turns.

Does the 1973 truck use a firewall mounted solenoid along with the starter mounted one?
Just get the One terminal 460 starter, a starter cable, and one of these.starter relay
The system is the same concept .......it is just another better way of doing it .
thats how i have the truck wired now. I just need to know if i can get a 460 starter compatible with it - looks like i can, just got to figure out what one of those starters (single wire type) is on.
the single wire unit i have from my 302 bolts up fine, it just dosent disengauge far enough- can that be fixed with shims?
mil- i do need some numbers. I have a ford '73 460 with the C6 transmission. I need the model number for a single wire starter, thus using the firewall mounted solenoid.
The 460 starter has solenoid and should have a heavy wire running from the solenoid to a stud on the starter. All you have to do remove that wire and run one from the fender solenoid to that stud. Effectively bypassing the low mounted solenoid.

This solution sounds close. But I am wondering if the starter he has is like a GM, where the solenoid on the starter actually pulls the gear out to the flywheel, and also switches the current.
If it is like that, the solution is very very simple. Find the small wire terminal that triggers the 460 starter. Hook a small wire there and then hook it to the large terminal were the battery cable hooks to the 460 starter.
Now, instead of hooking the starter battery cable to the battery +, instead hook it to the Ford fender mounted starter solenoid. Everything from there to the battery will be original Ford wiring.
When you trigger the old Ford solenoid on the fenderwell, it will send power down to the 460 starter. When you do that, you are also sending power via the small jumper to the solenoid on the starter, and then everything works as it should.
