just wondering if anyone else has had this same problem: i can smell fuel at the front of the truck and a little bit inside while driving. it appears there may be a small amount of fuel or oil on top of the motor under the turbo, i do not see anything leaking anywhere, the fuel smell is the strongest just after i shut it off. does anyone have any ideas? thanks in advance for your help.
4 T20 torx screws hold the valve to the fuel filter housing. Remove them and then the drain hose that is just pushed onto the valve outlet. pick out the 2 orings and replace.
Somewhat interesting how things seem to happen in droves...
Today my Excursion sprang a huge leak from the fuel filter housing cap. I changed the fuel filter about 6 months ago and it has not leaked a bit until today. I noted the strong smell of diesel just before I pulled into my spot at work. When I got out of the truck, I could see the trail that I left and I could hear the fuel pouring underneath the truck. So I turned the ignition on (knowing that pressurizes the fuel system) and a pressurized stream of diesel, about as big around as a pencil, was shooting out of the fuel filter housing where the cap mates with the housing itself. I'm not sure why it happened, but boy was it pouring out. [My neighbor, who also happens to work where I work, told me he just followed the smell of diesel home...I told him I wouldn't charge him for the aphrodisiac-like effect of diesel fuel on women ]
I went ahead and changed the filter and all the o-rings. The cap was tight and the seating surfaces were in great shape. The only thing I noted was (and I'm a little embarassed to say this because I'm a fairly experienced shadetree mechanic) that there were 2 of the cap o-rings installed. I took one off tonight and had I not seen the bulge where the o-ring failed, I would not have seen the second o-ring still stuck to the cap--it was that compressed. So ensured that ALL o-rings were truly off, cleaned/inspected the surfaces, and put it all back together with no leaks. Hopefully it will keep this time!
