I recently bought a 55 F-100 from a man in Texas. This truck should have a 239 V-8 and a 3-speed tranny w/ overdrive. After removing the engine & tranny for restoration, I've noticed it only has a 3-speed without the overdrive. The person I bought it from told me it has a 272 V-8. Can anyone tell me how to identify exactly which engine this has. I was thinking maybe someone swapped the engine and tranny all as one to the 272. THANKS!
According to my manuel put out by the Ford division, it states that a 1955 F-100 should have a 239 Y-block. Is this true or not? My truck is a custom cab, which did have the overdrive option. It does have the pull out handle under the dash & the kick down switch under the gas pedal, although there is no solenoid at the transmission. I thought maybe someone switched the engine, since the tranny doesn't seem to be the original. THANKS Any info would be a great help!
On most y-blocks, a casting # is found above the oil filter. Ex. EDB 6015 D. To my understanding, 6015 is the Ford number for "engine block". The first three letters should tell you more. Hopefully you have a 272 not the 239. There is a lot of info out there on y-blocks. Check out this discussion group

Surfer,
Why would you rather it be a 272 versus the 239. The 272 is a 1956 or newer Y-block according to my manuels. It also is a 12 volt system. Shouldn't my 55 have a 239 as the original.
