Dpst?

Hi All,

My roommate has a 2002 F150 and the engine light has been on for a while now. She took it to the local autoparts store and had the code scanned and it came up as the egr valve. So she took it to the dealer today to have it fixed under the extended warrenty. Well long story short it wasn't the egr valve and they told her that it wasn't covered under the warrenty so she just went to pick it up. She said they told her it was the DPST. I have never heard of such a beast, and I can't find any reference to it anywhere on the web (other than double-pole, single-throw switches). I'm wondering if she heard them wrong?

Anyone have any ideas what it could be? I guess I'll just wait until she gets back and see what the paperwork says.

Thanks!

We need to know what engine and what the extended warrenty coverage is.
The code is needed to get a lead on what system is in trouble.
This is a case of information, then decision, then action.
A DPFE might be under extended warrenty depending on the mileage.
FE could be mistaken for SP by one who ordinarly does not know part names on an engine.
The DPFE is an emission test sensor and has a factory warrentee in excess of the normal truck warrenty. If this is what is being referred to.

yeah after doing some more digging on here I'm pretty sure she meant DPFE not DPST. Right now, that's all the information I have until she gets back from the dealership. Oh, that and it's the 4.6L

Thanks for your help, I'll let you know what I find out when she gets back.

I'm pretty sure she has less than 70K on it. When she bought it she bought and extended warrenty with it and I guess that's what it's not covered under. I forgot about the emissions stuff being covered under a longer factory warrenty. Do you know what the limit is on that?

OK, she just got back. It's a P0401 code and the dealership said it's the DPFE sensor. they wanted $350 to change that and clean the throttle body and some other stuff. NAPA has the DPFE for $30. I think we'll go that route.

There's a better than even chance that removing the throttle body and cleaning the EGR ports will fix the problem even without a DPFE change.

There's also a better than even chance that all the needed repairs should be covered under the Federal Emissions warranty and that the dealer was trying to screw her.

Consult the 02 owner's manual for warranty guide or exact details of the warranty coverage. Download from www.fleet.ford.com under MAINTENANCE if the one from the glovebox is missing.

I have a 2003 Ford Explorer V8 4.6L, it required DPFE sensor replacement last year and was covered by warranty. For Explorer, Under emmission warranty, DPFE's coverage is 5 years or 50K miles which ever comes first. I'm assuming they'll have similar coverage with the F150.

According to all the information I've been seeing in my research, most of the stuff covered under the Federal emissions warranty is only covered for 2 years or 24k miles. Only three things are covered under the 8 year/80k warranty:

* Catalytic converters.
* The electronic emissions control unit or computer (ECU).
* The onboard emissions diagnostic device or computer (OBD).

projectSHO89: I tried to download the owners manual from the site you gave, but it only has the recommended maintenance schedule.

The bad part is that the dealership she took it to is owned by her boyfriends dad, so I don't think they were trying to screw her, unless they didn't know who she was.

going through the GM ASEP program I have learned a ZILLION things about OBD II, I could go on for hours about it. The main point is that OBD II was created to meet stiffer government regulations and so that all manufacturers would have a uniform system for cars that are self-diagnostic. OBD I- computers did 80% driving/work, and 20% diagnostics, OBD II computers do 80% diagnostics, 20% driving/work.

If it wasnt for the government we would not have 3 way cats, or EGR valves, or a PCM that cared about your lean/rich mixture. OBD II is really about emissions, reducing the ammount of hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxide emissions.

As our teacher says "we cant shoot razor blades and battery acid out the tail pipe anymore- babies are going blind somewhere" haha i think its great.

Oh, and all these regulations may clean up the air, but they have big negative effects on performance, HP, and gas mileage.
