Not real difficult.. it's a simple bolt off, bolt on kind of thing.

Just make sure the vehicle is jacked up under the suspension and not under the frame when you do it.

Good luck!

I am waiting for my Bilsteins to arrive in a couple of days and will be performing this task also for my 99 Ranger.....so keep me posted on how it goes.

As always, there is a great tutorial on the tech info page from RangerPilot and the members.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...-tutorial.html

I've been thinking about this in advance and I am planning to pre-soak all the bolts with PB a couple of days in advance. Plus I plan to replace all bolts and nuts with stainless...just a habit of mine because of all the road salt we get here. I expect the front passenger to be the most difficult. I read that you will want to install the top of the shock first because it will be easier to pull down on the shock to expand it to the proper position.

Good luck. I think I made the right choice by spending the few xtra $ to get the Bilsteins.

Good question. My information indicates that replacemnt of the front shocks does not affect the alignment. At this time, I do not plan to realign. However my tires are at about half-life and probably a good time to check it anyway.

You only have to align the car if it has something like MacPherson strut suspension, because the shock and spring are combined in that suspension, and the top location of the strut dictates camber and caster. The Ranger suspension is not like that, as the A-arms are mounted to the frame independent of the shock.

Shock absorbers in no way affect ride height or suspension adjustment (unless they are coil-overs or struts) so there is no need to realign after replacement.

Soaking with PB is a very good idea, but the mounting bolts on shock absorbers typically come loose pretty easily (of course the exception will almost always be for people doing this repair for their fist time!)

Like i said, it's a pretty cut and dry repair.. just unbolt, remove, install and rebolt. Unless one of the bolts gives you a fit it shouldn't be a big deal at all!

Good luck! Let us know how it went!
