almost stranded... four times!

I own a '99 F350 7.3 PSD 300k miles, It has been starting hard the last few months, nothing new, I just plug it in and live with it, but the other day it died on me. On my way home from work I was going 65-70 on the freeway, and it chugged a couple of times and died. I coasted to the side of the freeway, put it in park and turned the key. It started right up. I drove for another few minutes, when I got back up to 65-70, the same thing happened. This happened two more times. The last time I started it, I kept the speed under 40-45, and it ran fine all the way home. When I got close to my house I sped back up the 65-70, to test it, and sure enough, it died again. Does anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks

Does the tach drop like you shut it off when this happens - Could be the CPS

Another thing to look at is the wiring harnesses under the valve covers and each side of the 42 pin connector over the driver side valve cover for a chaffed or shorted wire

generally if the tach doesn't move on a 99 during cranking, you have cps problems which sound sorta like what you've got. it also sounds like fuel starvation kinda, but I'm not really qualified there

How old are the batteries and do they test well?

Welcome to FTE turfman.

The CPS these guys mention is the camshaft position sensor. It is highly probable that is the cause of the stalling problem.

The starting problem would be the glow plugs and/or the glow plug relay.

I had a similar problem with my '97 7.3. At highway speeds it would shut down like I had turned the key off. It would restart immediately and repeat the symptom. I had the fuel pressure tested, which was on the low side of the specs. I had the dealer replace the fuel pump, when they removed the pump, the pump shaft fell into the base of the engine. Not a good thing. They told me that the shaft should have stayed attached to the pump, not fall out when removed. With new pump installed fuel pressures were within specs again and I had no further problems with the truck. Hope this gives you some ideas.

my guess would be cps. if you need one go to an international dealer or ebay they are much more expensive at the ford dealer

Diffiicult to do?

Thanks to everybody replying! How difficult would it be to replace the CPS. I'm also going to check the fuel pressure, those symptoms sound similar.

Thanks again

Guys....are you sure about the CPS?.....I had that problem last year, and one thing that it NEVER did was conk out while underway.........It only conked out while stopping (almost at a stop), or while stopped. It just bucked and coughed while underway, but kept running.....and towards the end (when I finally got it switched out), it accelerated horribly (like missing a couple of cylinders).

Obviously, it wouldn't hurt turfman to go ahead and change it, but........

yea, my last one would do it between 65 and 75, the one before that woul do it at low speed only, and the one before that would only do it in park???????? go figure.

But the chugging description has me thinking short in the UVC.

Well....none of us are clairvoyant, but even considering the somewhat unique symptoms I feel it is the most likely source of the problem.

The mechanical pump in the 97 doesn't react quite the same way as the electric pump in the 99. I'm on my third fuel pump and I'm pretty comfortable suggesting that it is not the problem given the stated symptoms.

I just replaced mine. had to milk it to my friends garage, cause it was much warmer in there than outside. below Zero. but really took about 10-20 min. now I just have to order one again, so I can replace the glove box stash.
