It's not a difficult repair.. BUT it is very very CRUCIAL you get the timing set EXACTLY as the old one.
In other words, mark as accurately as possible the housing position to the engine, and the "rotor" position to the synchronizer... and transfer AS ACCURATELY as possible the marks to the new unit and reinstall in the same exact position.
They do make tools that will allow you to reinstall in the correct position, but in all honesty from experience these tools aren't any more accurate than marking the position yourself, as long as you're very very careful.
If it gets out of time someone will have to install digital equipment to show the cam and crank waveform patterns and adjust this at a specific point... in other words something you probably won't be able to do yourself and of which could cost as much as the synchro.. so I can't stress enough how important it is to be careful about your marks.
