An easey question?
Engine Oil Cooling!
Do these 7.3 PSD trucks have any sort of engine oil cooling system standard on them?
I havent really looked - to be honest theres a lot of radiator things out front presumably for the Radiator Water, and one for The air conditioner, and a lil intsy one down bottom for the transmission cooler - I'm just wondering is there a engine oil cooler one as well?
If not - towing in a hot country like hours (the equivalent probably of Texas) should I be considering adding one?
These engines do have an oil cooler...look for the large tube heading from the front of the oil filter pedestal...I tow heavy in hot country (Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico) and you will not have an oil temperature problem towing.
What you ought to be concerned about is the transmission...very inadequate cooling. I put in a 40K rated auxillary cooler. Never see transmision temps higher than 160 or so EXCEPT when pulling heavy loads on steep slopes at very low speeds (5-10 mph) on desert trails. Last year I added an auxillary fan to the transmisson cooler and when I am creeping along I just flip a switch and it never gets hot. If I was to do the tranny cooler over, I would have bought a tranny cooler with a built in fan.
When you installed the oil bypass system, you actually tapped into the rear header on the oil cooler. The oil filter is attached to it, and it is the long cylindrical thing that runs below the exhaust manifold.
No worries - thats what that pipe was for!! (The penny drops).
Kinda hard to tell flat on your back under the truck - and my mind was on "other things" at the time!
Thanks for answering the question tho...
I'm all over this transmission cooling thing like white on rice!
I'm gonna definitely fit a auxillary fan on the aftermarket cooler in front of the radiator when I install it!
Just doing all my research here first so I get it right the first time!
thats the power steering fluid cooler. the factory trans cooler is between the AC condensor and after cooler (intercooler)
Ohh - OK thanks - looks like I need to go take a better look then.....and see whats there now in the way of a cooler!!
Damn theres so much stuff under the hood a this truck i'm never gonna come to grips with it!
I guess you all have shifted your jack handle etc from above the radiator where it's gonna be too hot to use if needed? What genius thought of putting it there?
Wheres a better spot for it?...behind the rear seat?
I have several different pairs of gloves in my truck. Jack handle stays where it was. I always know where it is.
i agree...i keep my gloves in the tool box.. they always stays on top cause i use them often and while fueling..if my jack handel was in my tool box.. when i need it.. it would be at the bottom barried..so its better off under the hood where it was made to be..

Cheers!
Just a little different than what you'll find under the hood of an old fj-40 landcruiser!
Just out of curiosity Flywest, does that PSD of yours get a lot of attention over there in Australia? I can't imagine there are a lot of American made diesels running around there.
I'm in a little city on the coast of 25000 pop'n - just about 40 miles south of the capital city Perth...(Think America's Cup)..
The local Ford dealer had 5 of them new & second hand over the last 5 months - all are sold - no new ones being imported for yr 2007 - so they are getting hard to find and command top dollar!
It's mostly folks with qa heavey towing task who go for them...boat dealers & bobcat operators, trdaesmen in grano working who caqrt a lot of tools and men to job sites - that sorta thing!
It seems the guys who drive trucks for a living like to drive a Ftruck for their daily driver as well....something about diesel fuel getting into the veins...
I went for a hours drive to the optometerist today and then to the supermarket - i saw about 3 in my travels (you tend to notice them on the road when you drive one!)..
They aren't prevalent, what we consider a "large"4wd here are the Toyota and Nissan Patrol 4 door wagons....which are about 2/3rds the size of a F truck and typically sport a 6 cyl diesel of about 4.2 litres capacity some turboed!
Because of the size ogf the F trucks we tend to have difficulties in shopping centre carparks, and some home garages etc with the F trucks!
There is very much a "Tim Th Toolman Taylor" deep gutteral "Arrggh arrggh arrgghh" factor associated with driving a F truck downunder!
People don't seem near as keen to block you in front or cut across in front of you - you SEEM to get a lot more leeway to go where and how you want on the road - the cheeky little zippy car drivers with front wheel drive bubble cars take one look at "Effie" boring down on them, and basically just get the hell outta the way - which is just how I like it!
I'm getting to like driving it!
Couple big chromed leg burners to puff out some black smoke would be cool!

Well, we have the same problems over here, unless you are lucky enough to live in a newer town where the engineers were smart enough to build wider roads and larger parking lots. I find myself in pretty interesting situations sometimes, especially in parking lots. I was at a gas station in a small farming town last weekend and literally had to get out of my truck to tell some guy to GET OUTTA THE WAY, he was blocking me in wanting my fuel spot and I couldnt go anywhere.

Cheeky little zippy car drivers, LOL, unfortunately, I threaten to run one of those over at least once daily! I like the way you put things to words!
