GlowPlugs for a remote starter

Does anyone know if there is a particular ignition or accesory wire that controls the glowplugs. I am having problem with a Viper Remote started actually starting the truck on the first try after sitting all night in the cold. The Remote start is programed to wait 45 seconds to allow the glowplugs to warm, but still just cranks with no start. When it goes through a second round, it starts. I want to make sure I have the correct wires.

This is actually common. My guy says there is no way around it. As long as it starts on the 2nd or 3rd try.

Wow, 45 seconds and still no start. How cold was it out? Although this year the weather has been so warm I have yet to use the block heater, last year at temps in the single digits (F) my remote never had a problem. I have it programmed for 10 sec delay with no issues. I have never seen the glow plug light take more that 10secs to go off, so that it where I set my remote delay.

For the 06 I am told there is a sensor remotes can tap into but it is a computer signal of some type, and the module is a few hundred bucks. Since the 10sec delay has been working fine for me, I never made the added investment.

I do use the block heater for nights below 0 F when possible. Sometime's the truck is left at a construction site with no power and the option is not available.

I have a Viper in my truck & it starts right up with the remote start. Hot or cold weather, it doesn.t matter. Sounds like it may be an installation problem.

There must be a way around it. The ignition harness is what operates all the systems of the truck. The wrong ignition or accesory wire must be tied in. The one time I didn't install something myself, and it gets screwed up. If you are a decent electronics installer, and word gets around, you could really make a killing.

Your problem is your crank time, you need to reprogram the crank time to 1.1 or 1.5 seconds, I think the default is .5 or .8 seconds.

45 seconds is way too long for glow plug timer delay, I would cut it down to 15 - 20 seconds, unless it very very cold.

The problem is the wait time, the fuel pump primes the system the first 5 seconds the key is on but not again until the alarm recycles the system.
Shorten your delay time.

I had the same problem with mine. I installed the unit myself and found the problem was the crank time. I had to hook up the tach wire on the truck to the unit so it could sense rpm instead of using a pre-programed crank time. Now the truck will crank until the engine starts. Works first time everytime.

I had a similar problem when I installed my alarm/remote start. Timer delay set at 10 sec and increased crank time fixed it. It rarely doesn't start on the first try, but it does take two cranks every once in a great while. As for the wire to tap into the glow plug light on the 05, forget about it. I researched that one for a while and finally settled for the timer relay.

Its not the crank time that needs to be changed. The remote starter is hooked up to the tach wire on the truck, so it cranks until the vehicle starts. Ithink I may need to make sure the wiring is correct, and the unit is programmed to turn the accesories on while waiting to start. The wait to start timer is already set for 15 seconds, which I know is not to long.

Check and see if the glow plug curcuit is getting power during the delay. Sounds to me like you are on the right track, your glow plugs may not be getting power until start.

Mhoefer, do you know what wire on the ignition controls the glow plug circuit?

No ignition wire controls the glow plugs. The Glow Plug Control Module is commanded "ON" by the PCM. There's only one ignition wire, it's a small gauge(smaller than the surrounding wires), White/Yellow wire. It should have a larger gauge Pink wire from the RS hooked-up to it. The easiest way to determine if the proper ignition wire is hooked-up, is to simply get into the vehicle, close the door and then remote start it. If the dummy lights in the instrument cluster light-up like normal, then it's hooked-up correctly. If you'd like to check all of the wires, here you go:
