i'm thinking about buying a inline 6 from a buddy of mine. i'm gettin this truck for 600 dollars. so i was wondering wat to expect in mpg. i'm pretty sure its fuel injected and a manual. everything on its stock.
hell $600 aint bad
It depends though, some people say that the 300 gets the same milage as the 351. Mine however gets damn good milage. I dont know the exact numbers, but for such a big truck youd be surprised how good it is on gas. Mines a np435 with 3.55s carbed
Just finished a test on a mountain road and back, all paved, 2-lane, 80 miles roundtrip. Veh-1: '89 F150 I6 300, 4WD SWB, 5-spd manual, 3.55 gears, got 18.4mpg on the trip, fueled up at same station, same pump, same direction.
Veh-2 (next day, same time, temp, traffic): '94 F150 XLT 4WD, V-8 351, automatic w/o/d, don't know the gear ratio, got 17.8mpg, same road, same pump, same direction, same driver (me). Both trucks have the same size and shape topper, the XLT has the rear bench seat, the I6 standard cab, both trucks have the same size bed, the XLT weighs more but I don't know exactly how much. Would guess about 500-600lbs.
So there doesn't seem to be much difference in the mpg between the two trucks. The I-6 has about 80,000miles, about 1,000 of them mine (plus a lot of repairs so far), the V-8 has about 136,000miles, all of them mine. If I was going on a road trip I'd prefer the XLT with all it's creature comforts, but out in the desert or up in the mountains the I6 gets around tight places a lot easier and I don't have to be careful to not tear off the fiberglass ground-effects and running boards that the XLT has. :-)
stock carbed 4.9, np425, i think 3.08 gears, long bed, and 30" stock tires ive recorded a best of 16 mpg highway. Usually 14 or 15 though. Record low is 11.2, but i was having some ignition problems.
The best I've ever gotten with my 95 300 5speed was 18.9 mpg highway, but it usually gets about 17 highway. I'm thinking about replacing the O2 sensor, but I'm going to rule out everything else first
Mine is stock for now and gets 17-18 unless im hauling or towing a heavy load or putting my foot in it a lot. Pretty quick im gonna put on a set of 31s and remove some emissions equipment.

Your milage is pretty good.
Thirty-ones will be fine, but removing emissions equipment will probably cause you problems without gain.
The milage for these trucks seems to vary quite a bit from truck to truck. (which may be more related to driving habits than anything else). For the I-6, people seem to report between 15-20 mpg highway. For the 351 people seem to report 12-18 mpg highway. So on average I, the 300 seems to get somewhat better milage than the 351. However comparing the worst 300 to the best 351 will show otherwise.
That being said, here are my personal results.
During the summer, I generally see 20mpg with 90% highway driving. During the winter this drops to more like 18mpg. (the drop may be due to winter gas being less energetic, plus longer warm up times)
Here are my truck details:
1996 F-150, 300 I-6
2.73:1 differential gear ratio (this is key)
2WD
Long bed
5-speed manual
stock tires in the winter, 31" in the summer (I don't think this is effecting my milage, because even when I used to use the stock tires in the summer I would get 20mpg)
4150lbs empty
Also, I drive fairly conservatively, accelerate slowly, and generally don't rev much past 2000RPM. (1700RPM @ 70MPH is great for the milage)
I got 10.5mpg pulling a 12'X7' trailer that is 6.5' tall into a 20+ northwestern Nebraska headwind and 5 degree temps. Some people think its fine to move in February and for some reason I'm supposed to help...
My Truck. Bone stock 1978 Ford Ranger, carburated 300ci inline 6 with no emission control from factory, 4x4 4-speed on the floor, 142,000 miles.
Drove it up to NY from VA loaded down and got ~20 mpg. Driving it regularly i get at least ~23 mpg. With 4wd engaged, ~12mpg. I love this gas mileage, the engine is a sweet one, kept clean and tuned all the time.
