Cool Oil Pan Rusted?

I brought my 2002 excursion to my diesel service shop, for an oil change, and filter changes. I also asked him if he could tell where I had an oil leak because I left a couple of oil spots on my driveway. I got a call a few hours and he told me that my truck was done but he was gonna leave it on the lift so that he could show me the leak (The tone seemed like a doctor about to tell you about a major illness) when I got there he showed me that the leak was due to my oil pan rotting out!!!!!! and an idea of how much work is involved in changing the pan on a 7.3 diesel...!!!!!!!! I dont understand how a pan could rot out like this the truck is a 2002 with 55k on it.... I'm going to have the dealer look at it since the warranty isn't up untill 2/14/07 (due to the 5 years 5/100k warranty). I hope that they will cover it. Has anyone else had this problem and is it under warranty?

I doubt they will cover it, the pan was painted from the factory. I would bet the ever so faithful Ford employee will say something to the effect of, you damaged the paint/protective coating on the pan which allowed contaminates (fertilizer, road salt, air) to come into contact with the metal. So you need to fire off about the defect (oil on surface at time of painting, poor paint, worker's last friday on the job, ect) that caused the pan to rust. I still doubt they will replace the pan, more than likely they will just patch it up and send you on your way.

Shoot! Let ALL of the oil drain out the rotted pan & burn up the motor (before warranty deadline)! Then let the warranty replace the entire engine instead of just the oil pan.

LOL some people... they will replace the pan. But ask to have the new one line-xed before the install ( your cost on that but it will save you in the long run) should cost you the $100 deduct and thats it...

Why ford riveted the X member in I will never know...
