Older drum brake linings were attached with tubular rivets. I have an old foot operated rivet spreader from a Ford shop. Are the rivets brass or steel? I would like to find a source for hollow steel rivets of the type that attached fan blades on old electric fans. A home made spreader could be fabricated in the shape of a 'C" Clamp.<sfal@ala.net>
Around here in California the Orchard Supply Hardware store chain carried them in various sizes until they were bought out by Sears. Now all you can get there is the "assortment" that has only a few of each size and material that no one could possibly want. They should still be available over at ACE or Coast to Coast. I was thinking of maybe a pair of vise grips to squeeze them, but am at a loss as to what the anvil or spreader should look like.
McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com) has quite a selection of rivets and tools. They have an incredible on-line catalog with lots of other items. I've ordered at least 100 different items I needed to rebuild my '56 F-250. Everything from specialty fasteners to high-temperature paint for brake drums. Highly recommended. It's also very easy to order on-line and I get more than 95% of the stuff I order the next day! I'm in Ohio and delivery may be longer for other areas.
Thanks Earl! I completely forgot about them! I've only been in aerospace manufacturing and tooling for 18 years, you'd think that would be one of the first places I'd look, duh!
