I don't know if it's so much that Ford thought we needed it, or the EPA thought we did to help with emissions when cold.

I say ditch it. Mine's been gone for the last two winters and I've never had a problem. Temps here (well, back in Missouri - I'm in Maine until tomorrow), can get down to the single digits during the winter.

Well, that is how that mechanic seems to think. That Ford has built the perfect truck for everyone. Nothing more should be added and nothing less should be removed. If it is there, Ford put it there for a reason and we have to accept it. If it is not there, it should not be there. He is one of those that believe Ford did everything right and nobody else should mess with it. Tried to explain that Ford did not come to me and build the truck the way I wanted it to be built. Didn't work.

I can understand that. Some people have a certian way of thinking, and refuse to look at any other way. But, I'm glad that not everyone thinks that way, or we wouldn't be enjoying modified Powerstrokes that work different from how Ford intended them, and we wouldn't be suffering from PMS either.

Well he's an idiot if he cannot see that Ford succumbs to EPA regs and that is all in certain situations. That AIH serves no other purpose and it is a marginal one at that.

I'd be an idiot too if I believed that I could change his mind

Check your wiring from the front relay. It will go directly to the AIH which is located in the intake manifold just prior to going into the heads,

Being good with my hands, but not a real mechanic... how do you do this? Also, being new to the diesel world, I need some pretty specific instructions. This would be a really great thing to know.

These are the instructions for removal of the AIH itself. It does not show the AIH relay but it is the larger of both of the relays on the passenger side VC and should be the one towards the front IIRC.

Just trace the wires that go to it... Remove the ground wire and remove the hot wire. Then remove the plug, cut the prongs on both ends and reinstall it.!

Thanks, Tenn, but i was asking more specifically about using one relay in place of the other. I have already accumulated the details for the AIH delete, which I am planning to do very soon. However, in using the AIH relay in place of the GPR, are there any special details that are critical, or is it a straight swap out? Also, if I'm stuck somewhere and lose my GPR and want to use the AIHR in its place, can I run without the AIHR?

I would not use the AIHR to replace a GPR but rather in a pinch until I could get a new GPR. If you look at them, size aside, the are similar in design and function, therefore I would simply install the GPR wires onto the AIHR the same way they were mounted on the GPR. May involve moving the AIHR mount if the wires do not reach. Is that what you were asking?

That's it exactly. I just wanted to make sure I knew how to "pinch hit" with it if I had to. I didn't really mean to make it sound like I thought that they were a one-to-one swap... just an emergency solution. Thanks, Tenn.
