Ok, Ford gurus, here's a question for you. I've always liked having a locking gas cap on my vehicles. So I buy one for my newly acquired '05 F150. The store clerk says its the right one, but in a few miles the info window on the dash says "check fuel cap". So I take it off and install the original one, but the note is still on. I had cut the retainer strap to get it off, does this have anything to do with cap sensor? Seems like it wouldnt be that, or will this warning go off by itself, or is this a trip to the dealer?
If the OBD still works like it does on my '95 Ranger, the code will clear after a certain number of warm up cycles without the fault, four or five maybe, can't remember exactly.
Disconnecting the battery will clear the code on my old truck with no problems too.
I don't know if the code should clear after a certain number of engine starts, but mine would not....Went to dealer, took them 5 min. to clear it with no charge to me...

Reason: Spelling
When I bought my new truck the dealer had to put a new battery in it. When they did they had to reset the keyless entry fobs. So mabey disconnecting the battery will also open that can of worms.
If you do not want to go and have the code cleared via the OBD-II reader, then it will clear after several drive cycles. The code for a gross leak of the evap system will take about 5 drive cycles. A drive cycle has different peramitors for different types of codes. It will take longer if your full level is very low during this time. Between 1/2 and 3/4 is best.
Thanks all, my "check fuel cap" message went off by itself. One of the counter jockeys at Auto**** told me it should go off after about 50 starts. It was somewhere around that. So for now no locking gas cap. No lock on my .45 either.
You might want to get a different fuel cap....I remeber here in the past people getting a Locking Fuel cap and then having the same problems as you onlky to replace it for the same type from the same place to have it work again. Just a thought.
Oh, I should have added, that I think a locking gas cap is a good idea. For me not so much for gas thieves, but I heard through through grapevine, that some moron group, is going around sugaring gas tanks on large SUV's and trucks. At least a locking cap would slow that dow a bit.
I like bait's idea of not locking the .45. Man I would love to catch some idiots doing something to my truck. Let the torture begin!
I got a Stant brand locking cap at Pep Boys for my 06 F150, and for my 06 Expy, and have had no problems. The Stant caps even allow you to retain that plastic retainer. I had gone to Autozone, and the low life kid there tryed to sell me some off brand that looked nothing like the original. So I told him never mind, and he insisted that's what the computer called for so I handed it to him, and walked off and went to Pep Boys, so beware. On the Stant cap, the threads look identical to the original.
