Upfitter Switches

Do the upfitter switches only work with the key on or at least in accessory?

I am a decent mechanic, but lack electrical skills. I am using one switch for my topper light, another for auxillary backup lights and another for a 12v receptacle by the tailgate. Do I have to run both the positive and negative wires from the relays behind the glove box to the lights or just the positive and use a chassis ground close by?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can't answer your questions. My truck did not come with them but I am looking into getting them.

This shows how to install it:

Ignition on only and a chassis ground close by will be fine. Also if I understand your ?, the connections are actually close to the fuse box in the wiring harness. There are also wires that run through the firewall if you want to use them...

It's plug and play, you will not have to run anything from the glove box to anywhere, except when you mount the harness. Above the glove box is where the relay/fuses for the switches mount. Check out the links as they have some great pics that will help you understand everything.

Thanks for the info guys. My truck came with the switches, I am just hooking up. I see the pass thru wires on both sides of the firewall, I need to look again to find the blunt cut wires to hook up to the pass thrus. If two of them are 30 amp, they will have to be 14 gauge I would think.

I think any of the wires will work, but make sure you pick the right switch.

If you pull the panel that is below the steering wheel down you will find the central junction box. It is held in by four bolts and comes down fairly easy. You can either pull the box down and expose the four wires for the upfitter switches, or if you are double and triple jointed, you can crawl up near the brake pedel and look at them from behind. Since the box comes out so easy, I suggest doing it that way.

The four wires should be

AUX 1, 30 amp, orange wire with light green tracer.
AUX 2, 30 amp, orange wire
AUX 3, 10 amp, orange wire with yellow tracer
AUX 4, 10 amp, orange wire with light blue tracer

Also the two 30 amp wires will clearly larger than the other two.

Hook up what you want to the associated switch, attach a ground to the frame (several good spots under the dash) and away you go.

Just my .02 cents, but even for a neophyte like myself, it was pretty easy.

Good luck!

That's a great description and I have removed the 4 screws holding the fuse box in place and pulled the box out of the dash. I still can't see any wires like described above! I'm probably staring right at them and it will be so obvious once I find them. Do the 4 upfitter orange wires come out of the fuse box or are they just part of a bundle that comes off the fuse box?

Update: I found 'em! They are NOT obvious, even with the fuse panel box pulled out of the dash. The 4 orange upfitter wires are taped to a larger bundle of wires with some white tape. The tape has "Aux 1, Aux 2, Aux 3, and Aux 4" on it, which is how I finally identified where these wires were. There is no way I would have found them without pulling the fuse box out of the dash (unless I had a two year old who could have crawled under the dash to look).
What gets me is that there are several other wires under the dash that hang down in plain view including a bundle of 4 (red, black terminated with a connector and 2 blunt cut brown) hanging down by the E-brake pedal. For an accessory that is supposed to be a useful option, I would think Ford could have put this upfitter bundle in an easier place to find!
