we just bought a "new" '05 Ltd V-10. And I mean "new"...14,000 mi...looks and smells new. I am GLAD it has very soft springs - solved the rear riding height issue when a heavy trailer tounge load was applied, with big fat air bag kit.
But I am concerned about the front riding height. How much space should there be between the front "bottoming bumper" and the suspension. I can not get three fingers in there..looks like only about an inch and a half.
I want to keep it as stock looking and as low as possible. What is the MINIMUM suspension travel between that "bottoming bumper" and the axle, assuming I am NOT going to do any serious off-roading..? ?
( as a side note..how in hell could they sell these things without a rear sway
bar - damn thing wandered like a drunken pig...! A Hellwig swa bar on the rear
sure made a difference...tracks as nice as any truck I have driven....!)
Yeah...Hellwig is a definant first mod kinda thing.
The front suspension does indeed only ride about 1-1.5" below the bumpstop. The bumpstop is actually an intergral part of the suspension set-up rather than just a travel stop. It was redesigned mid-production (can't remember the year off-hand) to help give better suspension compliance.
Early models had one that was hard as a rock. Guys would cut half of it off or replace it with Timbrens.
what are you telling me..leave it alone ? I was thinking of bringing the front riding height up about an in. more than it is now - can do that with air shocks (certainly dont want to do that with heavier springs..like that nice soft ride !). Yes...I know..I know...technically..no such thing as FRONT air-lift shocks...but...you know us good ole Yankee boys...give us a big enough hammer...some welding rod...and some carbide blades...........
I guess I am telling you to leave it alone...in a respectful kinda way. There is more travel in the front than the space between the spring and the bumper. That bumper compresses quite a bit. Try parking in a off-camber situation and take a look-see at it.
thanks for the info - will take your word for it - you sound like you know what you are talking about. We will try it the way it is on our next trip, and see if it 'bottoms' on normal highway & VERy mild off road driving - from what you are telling me..it shouldnt.
