I have decided to install a Volare type IFS under my truck mainly for cost reasons. I have the list of potential donors that will work, my problem is how to decide between all of them? Would you guys agree that the best bet is a K-member out of a low mileage late model car?
Look for a late 80s (89 was the last year) Chrysler 5th Avenue for the latest model. A low mileage one would be great if you can find one. The one I used came out of an '87 with about 115K miles on it and it was in pretty good condition considering I live in the rust belt...
Thanks Vern,
I was kinda leaning toward the New Yorker or 5th Ave. Hopefully i will get lucky and find a low mileage one. Boy I couldnt imagine trying to find old parts in the rust belt, But I guess it just makes the hunt all the more fun!
Hey ,another mopar front suspension guy , welcome aboard . Greatnorthwoods ( whom i know personally , nice guy too lol ) and i both have the fifth ave front end . It appears to be a bit heavier made than the aspen/ volare . I was looking for a volare / aspen when I happened to locate the fifth ave at a local salvage yard . It still had the plates on the car from the night before so I bought it and drove it home . The install is pretty much straight forward , I do highly suggest buying the video from No Limit because it will save you alot of headaches. I also live up here in the rust belt and good donor cars are getting scarce but mine came from jersey so the rust issue was not really a problem . Take your time find a good donor car , replacement parts are still available at your local parts store or you can score some great deals on replacement parts on ebay if you are not in a hurry . Good Luck .
I have what I thought was a Volare front end in my 56 f100. But, after reading the many comments from club members, I don't know if it's Volare, Aspen, Fifth Ave, or are they all the same (except the police models and Imperials). I bought the 56 with the dodge/Plymouth front end in the truck. The torsion bars are self contained on the "K" member. The biggest problem I'am having is that when I go over a rise in the road or a bump, as the truck begins to settle it wallows, and feels as if the drivers side wheel wants to fold up under the front end of the truck. I don't think it is actually doing this, but it sure feels like it. It got much better after I replaced the front shocks, but it is still a scary ride at times.
Also, I want to remove the bucket seats and install a bench seat so my wife, my daughter, and I can ride in the truck together. Problem is I'm not sure what size seat to get. About the widest I think I can get is about 53 inches. I had a seat that was 59 inches wide but this created problems because you were not lined up with the steering wheel. In other words, when you sat in the drivers seat, your arms would be angled off to the right to steer the truck. Any comments/suggestions would be greatly appreaciated.
