i need to replace my exaust system for my 89 f150(300 4.9L L6) as stated in an earlier thread...
should i go with the flowmaster kit, or just go buy some pipes and line it up straight.... and with either whats the deal with removing the cats? im lookin for good sound, less back pressure, and NOT to get busted, hahaha... any suggestions will do
Removing the cats is illegal, most shops will not do it for you. The 300 is rather loud with out mufflers, so I would recommend a good muffler, the stock cats and decent pipes. I had intended on doing clifford headers, independant 2.25" duals with a H-pipe and borla XS performance mufflers on my 89 w/ 4.9L. I sold the truck, so I never got around to it.
its not really a whine, i shouldve worded that better, i have the whine from the steering pump too but the sound i was talking about was kindof like an electric motor kind of sound
I got a 2" pipe and unclamped the old exhaust, and used a hammer to put the pipe all the way through the cat so it was gutted but still there, then I put on a Thrush turbo muffler and it sounds good to me. It's actually pretty deep, and I was impressed with the power increase above like 3000 RPM. I did it to make it louder, but there was barely an increase in volume, and my check engine light hasn't come on so I would recommend doing this.
if your doing the exhaust the cheapest route is straight pipe, if thats to loud or you dont like the sound then you can try differnt mufflers. just remember it'll never sound like a v8, and if your lucky it wont sound like a honda either.
when i did the exhaust on my 82 f100, 300 I6, i straight piped it. it sounded like a stock car when started and revved. it was louder then hell when floored, sounded like a pulling tractor coming down the street. it had a wicked cackle sound if i down shifted it rolling up to a stop light, sounded like a semi on the jake brake.
the 300 is a weird sounding engine if the exhaust isnt just right, although mine sounded nothing like a v8 there was no mistaking it for anything other then a truck.
I want to do something with mine but not sure what. mine has a hole somewhere close tot he muffler, would like to run 2 inch pipe but that cost some Money.
i wanted dual just for the looks but everyone said before it be stupid to do that.. i was thinking come out behind the cab then Y it and run two pipes out the back... dont know what it would sound like.
i might be building a flatbed for the 300, im thinking about running stacks straightline up the side of the cab that way ill have room to interchange the bed back on if i need to, any suggestions/comments?
