Starter Going?

I have been experiencing some pretty nasty starts here and there with my truck. 1995 F350. 8 times out of 10, the truck starts up with good strong power, the other 2 times I will go to hit the key, and let me make this point, it always starts good on the first start of the day, it only gives me a problem when it has been running, like stopping for gas, then when I go to turn it back on, theres this very slow, and hard, weak progressive start up, and it will eventually start and run strong. What is causing that. The starter need to go?

Sounds like the timing may need to be checked. Any work done to the engine since this problem started? What engine do you have? I assume it's fuel injected?

The motor is a 1997 460EFI. Last May, we had the engine swap right after we bought the truck, the previous motor had rusted through with the previous owner. Anyways, there is a complete tuneup on the new motor in here, Distributor cap, plugs, wires, filter, new belt. Why might you think it be timing? I use 93 octane fuel in the truck, but i dont think that would be it because it loves it when shes driving. But, that may explain some of the hesitation i get when i slam the gas, it really bogs and bucks sometimes.

The symptom of cranking ok when cold, but dragging when hot, sounds like the timing is too far advanced. The computer controls the timing, but the dist does have to be set in the ballpark, because the computer only has a limited amount of adjustment. You have to disconnect the spout connector to take timing control away from the computer, and then set it according to the sticker on the radiator.

There are a few other causes of this, such as headers getting the starter too hot, but checking the timing would be easy and cheap if someone you know has a timing light.
