New engine swap trouble

I just finished throwing in a 302 from a 79 F-150 and a C-4 in my 56 Ford. I tried to start it for the first time yesterday to set the timing but the starter made a loud clank each time I turned the key as if something was holding the flywheel (But I could see the fan turn slightly every time I tried) I just pulled the tranny out about 2.5 inches and was able to crank the engine by hand. I was wondering if anyone might have an idea what the problem could be. The tranny is supposedly been rebuilt and not used yet. I also have a Lokar shifter hooked up so I'm not sure if maybe the tranny isn't in park and the truck won't start because of that. If anyone could help it would be much appreciated. Thanks

Jim

I am not sure but it sounds like the Torque Converter is not seated.

I am not familiar with the C-4 but on the C-6 it has to lock in two times. It seats and then with further turning, seats a second time.

Check to see if the tranny is free. If it is jammed at the torque converter, the crank and Torque conver won't move.

Jim, Did the starter that you are using come from the same vehicle as your 302 and C6?

New engine swap trouble

I managed to slid the tranny back in place and got it seated right. I just cranked the engine as I was pushing the tranny back on and it seated just fine. Now I just need to get some new spark plugs and wires and hopefully the thing starts. Thanks for the help guys

Actually, on a c4 or fmx, the Torque Convertor should slide back 3 times. If you can fit your fingers behind the convert. than you've got one more to go. That third click is important, with out it, the oil pump won't turn. I've burnt up a my trans before because of that. (I rebuilt the trans one week later, I blew up the 302, go figure!)
