Hello - Have an 84 F150 4.9 with a 3 speed. So far we've installed a headman 3-1,3-1 header and duals, with plans to install an offy dual plane and a holly 390 to 450. Funds ran tight so we are still running the 1bbl on the stock intake for now. The EGR is disabled and of course there is no heat riser, hot air choke tube nor oxygen sensor due to the addition of this header. The truck ran fine for several hundred miles (after warm) but now dies every time once fully warm, not to restart until it has completely cooled down, like overnight cooled down. The death is just like running out of gas. Don't know much about the internal workings af an EGR but knew this on was plugged tight to begin when I bought the truck. I wonder if its freed itself up enough to open from engine heat and cause a vacuum leak. It would be easy to find out if the EGR is the bad guy here but I've learned a non-emmission spacer for the carb/intake is rarer than a hens tooth and can't find one to save my life. Also thought possibly vapor lock could be a cause in all of this. Any help would be greatly appriciated.
Could be something electrical. When certain things are old and get hot, they stop working until they have cooled off. Next time it dies check to see if you have any spark. Some one should be able to tell more precisely what component is usually affected this way, but right now I just can't remember which one it is.
The O2 sensor could cause you problems. I might find a spot and drill/tap that joker in there. I've seen the electronic control module, drivers side fenderwell under the hood, cause the same problem along with coil, and other ***. parts. Do like Syco said when it quits. I'm betting on ECM but couls be the coil, pick up inside dizzy, wiring, on and on.
