howdy i have 2001 f150 with a 5.4 liter, weres the spark plug, is it inder the valve cover, do i need to remove the fuel rail. is that big plug like thing an idividual coil between injectors? how do you test it do the go out often. the truck does have 55,000 miles on it. i went to ford, napa, shucks and carquest, none of them have a manuel, ohh but theyll order one,
The plugs are on top of the engine more or less under the fuel rail, the White round cylinders are the COP's and sit on top of the plugs, pull the rail then pull the COP and the plug is down in the hole. 55K is right about time to change them, I do them every 60K to keep them from spitting out. It is very important to torque them correctly with an inch/lb wrench. Proper torque should be around 15 lb/ft not sure on the exact number off hand.
Yes the cop is the coil. These motors have coil on plug ignition. Each coil is over the plug hence the name coil on plug or cop for short. Was it the plug on the passenger side near the rear? The heater hoses are known to leak at the firewall & ruin the cop. Also the cops are known to go out one at a time.
Brr. These trucks are hard enough to repair in good conditions. Check the site, there are threads on how to replace the plugs. Use the search feature. This site has great info on Ford trucks
You cant really even see the plugs. You almost need a special socket to get them out. When I changed mine I bought this special sparkplug socket that has what looks to be almost like a sparkplug boot inside of it so that the plug doesnt fall out of the socket.
I did mine at 100,000 miles and they looked like brand new. Im glad the plugs in mine last a long time, because changing plugs on these trucks is a pain.
goter, 5/8 sp socket swapted sparkplugs dern thing still stumblin, guess ill try the cop. not only brr but winter here in alaska the daylight aint much for quality. i orderd a utility light from northern equipment, should have been here 2 weeks ago
