4x4 Auto Doesnt Work

I have an 02 F250 CC 4x4 PSD with manual hubs. On the hubs it says auto and lock. With it set to auto the 4 wheel drive doesnt work if I turn the hubs to lock then it works just fine. I may be wrong about this but shouldnt 4 wheel drive work if the hubs are set to auto as well as lock?

If so what could be the problem?

Thanks

yes the 4wd should work in the auto position but many people have problems with them. in the auto position the hubs are vacuum oerated and if there is a vacuum leak anywhere in the system the hubs will not operate properly. mine also dont work in the auto position for me its not a big deal to get out and turn them. its a convenience when they worked but at least when i get out and turn them manually i know its in 4wd instead of just hoping

Yep, it should work in the auto postion. There are 3 questions you'll need to answer for us. First, with the hood open if you turn the key on, without starting the engine, does the vacuum pump come on and run for a minute or so and then turn off? Second, With the engine running, if you have the air controls in the A/C postion and then switch into 4wd, does the air system default to the defrost postion? Third, do you want help fixing it or do you want to get out and lock the hubs everytime you need 4wd?

I will check out those 3 things today or this evening. I believe the vaccum does come on or something does and I have always wondered what it was. Yes I would like to fix this problem.

Thanks for the input so far!
