Has anyone attempted to use a later model ford spindle from a later model ford pickup or van to do the conversion. If so, are the king pins the same diameter and length?

Check out www.ecihotrodbrakes.com
They have a complete kit for this swap and it is cheaper than trying to find and fit used parts that may or may not work. Less than $350.00

Thanks for the information. We have already found the kit from a couple of sources.

I am still curious if later model for spindles will swap out. I have seen a lot of Vans and Pickups with the same type spindle already equipped with Disk Brakes. I am not sure however, if the King Pins are the same.

Any experience in this arena?

I'm sure that with enough time and money you could make anything fit, but your truck has the straight axle and no one I know has made that particular changeover. The ECI brakes work really well.
Good luck.

I understand however, some of the early 70 trucks and vans have a similar axle. There is a minor variation in the linkage configuration but the spindle from the king pin outward are almost identical.

I plan on doing a Mic check over the weekend. Just thought someone might have experience with this.

Some of the auto-parts steering parts books have listings of the king pin diameters and specs.

Even if you find one that the size cross refs. to all of the disc spindles lack the provisions to hook up the push pull type drag link. The steering link on disc brake trucks is a cross steer set up and won't hook up to your steering.

Did you ever find a brake system that fit? I've been trying to find info on this swap for a '59, but all I hear is "buy a conversion kit"!

Thanks

Unfortunately, I have to agree with the other providers of input. I have looked at a number of later model trucks and have come to the same conclusion they provided.

From an economical standpoint it would be best to get the economy kit provided by the company listed on one of the previous replies. It runs around 100 and includes the backing plate and the necessary bearing inserts to mount later Hubs and Calipers.

The hubs and calipers are readily available at various junk yards. I go to U-Pull it quite regularly and have seen the parts needed.

Any other method is going to be time consuming and very costly. I just finished mounting a 352 and C-6 and toyota steering box in my truck. The metal work for mounts etc has reached $110 not counting the mounts.

Additionally, I had to notch the crossmember for the front where the older transmissions mounted to leave room for the C-6 Pan. I have not decided at this point whether I want to weld in new pieces or rely on the structural integrity of the crossmember with notches.

Good Luck. I think $100 for the economy kit is money well spent.

Thanks. From what I've found, I have to agree that the kit is the best way to go.

Guys.
I have the ECI kit on my '63 and I have to disagree that the basic kit is the way to go. The complete kit has new brake lines, bearings, calipers, pads, rotors bolts, etc. By the time you scrounge up used parts, rebuild what you can and replace everything else, and gather up all the other stuff you need to finish the job, the $350.00 for all those new parts is a real bargain.
You will also need a proportioning valve, get one from Summit Racing for about $40.00.
A '68 Mustang GT dual master cylinder will bolt up unless you plan to use power brakes.
BE SURE to replace all the hard lines while you are doing this swap, and don't forget to replace the rear rubber line to the back brakes. Your trucks are over 40 years old and the lines have all kinds of corrosion and garbage in them.
Safety is way cheaper than losing a vintage restoration worth thousands of dollars because it won't stop. Don't matter how fast you can go if you can't stop when you want to.

I was talking to a guy the other day about this same idea, he said he put early 70's on a 63 and had to make some spacers for the difference in the height where the king pins go thru the spindle, I have a 63 that I'm trying to convert, my problem is the ECI kit is for the large truck bolt pattern, I changed my bolt pattern to the car 4 1/2 on 5 when I redid it a few years ago. ECI has a kit for using the car pattern but not for 63. My question to you is, would you mind measuring the bolt pattern on your 60 spindle where the backing plate bolts to it. If its the same as a 63 I can use the kit. Thanks Robert

Good insight. Probably will comply with your recommendation. What would you recommend for changing rear drums to self adjustable.

Yes, thanks. The measurements are the same on my 63.
