Your battery is either in need of charging, or it's about to croak.
A new battery should fix you right up. At least that's what I've read here on the forum.
yep. the gauges pegging on startup is a sign of a weak battery. When you crank the engine the starter pulls enough power that the computer can't stay running and does a reset, which you see by the gauges pegging. Have your battery tested and odds are it will fail the load test. Either that or your battery cables are corroded to the point where they can't carry enough juice. But my money is on the battery.
Don't rely upon these gauges...another thread in the forum says that they are dummies that only go on and off without accurate positioning. I know the oil gauge is pegged a the same spot whether the car is hot or cold, idle or 3,000 RPM. From a prior car that had a true, working gauge, this is impossible. Same with the voltage gauge, although it does drop when starting, but otherwise it's pegged in the middle of the range nomatter what load is on, or the RPM. Again, impossible with most systems.
The only gauges that seem to work is the coolant temperature and the gas gauge (thankfully!)
