Engine Hessitating With Smoke

2004 F350Diesel 6. 4WD Crew Cab Automatic Sometimes when starting off the truck engine stalls and about two seconds later it will take offf. When it finally starts to go, I see apuff of black smoke coming out of the exahust pipe. I Pull a 8k trailer every day and it will do this whether it is pulling aload or not.

What is a EGR valve? What does it do? I hear about removing it. What will it do to the warrenty? Where is it located?

the recirculates exhaust into the engine to help lower NOx gasses by lowering combustion temps. look dead center on the engine, right behind the intake elbow, you will see a kinda shiny cyclinder with a single connector coming out of the top of it and it is bolted down with 2 8mm bolts. if you are worried about damaging it, it is 400 bucks and it is cover under the 5/100000 warranty.
