I recently had to replace the original Steeltex tires and replaced them with the replacement, Firestone transforce AT's. Since then the truck seems to wander all over the place. Especially when towing on asphalt roads.
I have had the ball joints and front end checked all OK. The guys at Firestone checked everything and said it all looked good.
When towing I run 55 front and 70 rear as per the door post label.
Has anyone else had this problem, or is it unique to me?
It also wanders when not towing, but it isn't so pronounced.
When I put 4 new Goodyear wrangler AT's, mine started to wander. I figured, with 100K miles, it is due for front end work. It didn't get much worse, however, and I was busy, so I didn't do any front end work. I then replaced (after about a year) the fronts with Wrangler ATD2's, and now no more wander! It's like driving a new truck again. Go figure. What I noticed about the ATD2's is that there is a solid ridge on the outer edges of the tire, which the older AT's did not have. There still could be something loose in the steering or suspension, be sure to check this all out closely. Dont forget about the rear springs. A broken leaf can cause strange handling as well, especially when towing.
Start lowering your air pressure in the tires untill it stops wandering. Trust me, I had the same problem with new tires. I ended up with 45 front and 40 rear unloaded.
Mine will do this everytime with new tires. It should go away after a couple of thousand miles, if you can stand it that long. The tires need to flatten out on the tread and the new tread is so high is the cause I think.
