I received my "O" rings today for the turbo and pedestal. Now I have a question? What is the difference between the yellow and black "O" rings?
I purchased from ITP Diesel and never considered the color. Yet, I have now read some posts concerning the yellow type "O" ring. Input please.
Jeff
The o-rings you got from ITP are just fine, no worries. The factory ones have a yellow coating on them. I'm not sure why though. But, all of the one's I've used have been black and no problems.
The yellow ones are Viton, and are made to withstand high-heat applications better than you're plain old rubber.
Don't know why 2 of them are black, I would call Dennis and see what they are made out of.
The ones I got from IH are all yellow.
The yellow is just a coating though. When I pulled my pedistal off, the o-rings under it had the yellow coating on them, which had stuck to the pedistal. The o-rings themselves were still black. Just because they're not yellow, doesn't mean they're not Viton.
From the ITP site, as the description for their turbo pedistal o-rings:
"We have high quality Viton replacement O-Rings for the 7.3L turbo pedestal. This package includes (2) sets of O-Rings, enough to replace both the "Pedestal to Block" and "Turbo to Pedestal" seals. Whether you're doing turbo work or need to fix a leak, this set has you covered."
Cool, I didn't know they VITON ones came in black.
Some of the coating had cooked off of mine last time I pulled my turbo as well, they weren't black in the middle though, just a lighter shade of yellow/brown.
Again, Thanks for all your valuable input. next weekend, I pull the turbo, replace the "O" rings, then on to the rocker pedastal and injectors for re-torque and wire harness inspect.
