the dash lights quit working all of a sudden last week. the 4 amp fuse was blown, so i went to the parts store and found that they don't carry 4amp fuses, nor have they ever seen one. i tried a 3amp fuse and a 5amp fuse, but they both blew. I even tried a 10 amp, but blew it too. i have not done any thing to the electrical. the only thing i have done was change my pulley's and flush the cooling system (immediately prior to the fuse blowing)
Do you have an aftermarket radio? If so, I would pull it out and look at the wiring. The wire color you are looking for is blue/red.
If you can't find the problem behind the radio, then I would unplug the instrument cluster, and then try another fuse. That will tell you if the problem is in the cluster or in one of the dash lights.
I do have an aftermarket radio, but it was put in maybe 6 months ago and i have not had any problems in the handful of times it was driven since then. Could the light switch be bad?
Anytime you have wiring problems, 99% of the time the problem can be traced to were the wiring has been modified or the wiring has been moved out of place to work on something.
There is really nothing much to go wrong with the factory dash wiring. There may be the odd circumstance were a bulb shorts internally, but I think it would be worth it to take the radio out, lay all the wires out, and then try the fuse again. It may have taken 6 months for the radio to vibrate and rub through one of the wires.
This rule is good for anything done around the dash area. If any other work has been done lately, like wires pulled down for a brake controller, extra dash gauges added, etc., I would look there first.
