I have a "55" F-100 with disc brakes on the front. I'm using a master cylinder/proportion valve from a "85" ford Ranger. Will I have to change the proportion valve if I put disc brakes on the rear or use the e-brakes.
The prop valve only holds off the RATE of pressure buildup not the total pressure so no, you would not have to necessarily change the valve. However this is one of those "it depends" questions. What it really depends on is wether or not your rear brakes are held off during hard and abrupt braking. You are really going to have to try and see if your particuler combo will work correctly. This is the reason that the aftermarket units are adjustable. You will need to change the rear residual valve if your M/C is mounted under the floorboards.
If the Ford Ranger master cylinder is a disc drum combination
type it will have a residual pressure valve built in the port
of the master cylinder to the rear brakes. If you put rear
discs on this master cylinder the valve might cause the rear
pads to drag excessively. I wonder if a Granada master cylinder
SVO mustang master cylinder or something else that had 4 wheel
disc brakes would work better.
