Cap cushion foam

No luck posting this in the dress up and appearance forum, so I'll throw it out to you guys and general automotive forum:
I have the need to remove the cap from my truck and reinstall it several times per year.
The grey foam tape that I apply to the cap rail deteriorates rapidly when decompressed during cap storage and then compressed during cap use on the truck.
Anyone have any ideas for a sturdier material that could stay attached to the cap rail and maintain its integrity after repeated removals and installations of the cap?
I thought about some of that heavy pipe insulation and gluing it to the cap rail, but don't know if there are any better quality ready-made products out there.
Thanks for any ideas you might have!

The stuff I use is black and seems to last a long time. I double it up. The pipe insulation seem like it is worth a try. Any kind of weather stripping should work if it is thick and wide enough, and waterproof. What would you use to hold it on? What is the cap bottom made of?

That's what I am looking for: some ideas for availability of different weatherstripping.
The stuff I have used is about an inch wide and 1/4 inch thick. It just doesn't last. It is adhesive on one side so it remains stuck to the cap (that is good). But the foam portion of it decays rapidly with repeated use.
So, I guess this is what I want:
Thick foam weatherstripping with adhesive on one side that will hold it securely to the cap when the cap is removed from the truck.
The only thing I have found in local Ace hardware stores is the flimsy grey stuff.
I guess I'll try Lowe's and HD and see if they have anything more suitable.
Just thought someone out there may have already found something that works great.

How about where they sell the caps. That's where I got mine. It is about 1 3/4" wide. Never had trouble with it.
