i posted this on the intro forum and was told to direct it here.....i have a 2007 F250 diesel with 4000 miles on it....i'm only getting 10 mpg...whats up with this?
It would also help to know what kind of driving you typically do....towing a trailer and/or hauling around cargo can greatly impact your overall fuel economy as well.
only having about 4000 miles it sounds about right, 6.0s only get about 15 mpg on avarage, i am a ford tech and see many people complaning about fuel mileage on this motor, when broke in (about 10,000 miles) you should be around 15mpg. I have heard people say they get 20 -25 mpg but i am not sure how they do it, my personal experiance says about 15mpg is noramll when broke in.
Beings that I just filled up today, it reminded me that winter time typically means increased idling, and that has a noticeable affect on fuel economy.
Also where do you live, If you live in a cold climate then you probably have winter blend fuel that you are using, this also will reduce mpg. I just noticed that you have a 2007. This means that you have an ultra low sulfer motor and it as well is good for 2mpg less then the 2006 noramll fuel motor. thank are goverment for that.

The '07 model year is still the same 6.0L PSD found in previous years' Super Duties. The new 6.4L PSD that will be put in the new '08+ model years is Ford's new low sulfur diesel motor.
The motor itself is the same, however there were slight changes in the fuel system for the ultra low sulfer fuel, i have already seen what happens when customers with a 2007 6.0l use non ultra low sulfer fuel in there trucks, the motor will not run good. and I mean not good,. All diesle fuel pumps now have a stamp letting you know if it is ultra low or not. You can use ultra low sulfer fuel in any older diesle but do not use non ultra low in a 2007. Anybody with a 2007 6.0l can look in there owners manueal or on there fuel door and can see the big warnings about the fuel change.
If can I figure out how to do it i will give you the links that all of use ford techs got about the 6.0l ultra low sulfer for 2007 from ford motor. all 2007 6.0l are ultra low sulfer only.

You'll have to tell my engine that because it runs just fine on low sulfur fuel. It has none of the garbage that is on the new 2008 6.4 and is stated in the manual that it runs on low sulfur diesel. That was why I bought it as I didn't want to be restricted to ULSD as the 08 are.
I agree with Super08 my 2007 says it can run on either too. However, as far as I know all diesel being shipped to fuel stations since like October has been the ULSD. They are not allowed to put the ULSD sticker on the pump unless they clean the tank out beforehand, or enough ULSD has been added to the tank so that the mix is able to reach certain criteria qualifying it as ULSD.
I don't have any advice for the original poster, beyond the usual tips about RPMs at 2K or less, speed 70 or less on the highway, proper air pressure in the tires, minimize idleing (zero mpg), be sure to fill the tank the same amount each time to minimize your calculation errors, etc.
I have only 800 miles on my 2007, mostly unloaded highway miles, first tank was 14.6, second fill calculated at 15.3 mpg.
As for mileage on mine I have averaged 18mpg highway staying at 65mph and was getting around 13 in town, but that has dropped lately as it has been a little colder and I have done a little more idling. I haven't filled up yet, but I am guessing between 11 and 12 on my current tankful. (all numbers in US gallons) I just hit 1000 miles on the truck. I use Ford fuel conditioner with every fillup.
Ditto here. Only 500 miles on 2007 F250/diesel/auto/3.73LS/4x4. Getting average of 15Mpg unloaded. I get 18Mpg highway @65Mph if reset while driving. Using standard low sulpher fuel - NOT Ultra low sulpher.
