I went out the plug my block heater in tonight and i noticed a puddle under the truck , i went inside an got a flashlight , i have coolant leaking from the crankshaft seal.. this to me seems very bad ? is this common ? do you have to pull the motor to change this seal ? is it a big job ?

YOUR COOLANT leak WILL BE LIKLY the water pump above your crank. open the hood and look down wear your engine fan is bolted, thats your water pump.
it's probably leaking from the weephole on the waterpump behind the pulley. hard to see from under the truck, but if you look closely, you may be able to see a coolant stain leading to the weephole. not a hard job to replace the waterpump if that's your problem.
You need to replace the pump. A good check it to grab the fan and see if the fan shaft wiggles. More than likely it will, our weep hole begins leaking when the bearing goes bad. Good luck
Well i got a little lucky , my leak is just coming from the metal tube that bolts on to where the thermost is . So i tool it off and the rubber ring was ruined so i bought a new one , ford said they don't sell a gasket for between the metal tube and the water pump, and it was siliconed .so i cleaned all surfaces and re-siliconed it... leak went away for about a day then came back same spot as before , is there something better to use then silicone ?
Clean both mating surfaces really really well. I like the Ultra Copper Hi Temp, used to be part # BR-109. Let it skin about 10 mins prior to reassembly; that helps out if parts are not exactly flat.
Masterc that metal piece you are referring to is VERY easy to bend. I had the same problem when I changed my water pump. Make sure that the flange is perfectly flat. I had to lightly tap on it to get flat. I used the back of one of my vises to get it flat. When you reinstall that piece the rubber o-ring will seal if you do it carefully. You can't tighten the bolts really tight. Snug one down then another and then the last one. Don't tighten them nut bustin' tight either. They need to be snug only. If you tighten one too much you'll have a leak again (ask me how I know). If your water pump starts leaking from behind the pump up against the block you should replace the pump while your there. That water pump has a rubber o-ring instead of a gasket like alot of other vehicles have. To get it to stay in place put a tiny amount of petrolium jelly on the rubber o-ring while installing the new water pump. You will also need to get a hold of the fan/clutch tool to remove the fan. Autozone has them on loan a tool program. I just bought one though. I go with the theory if I need it more than once I need to buy that tool. Good luck I hope this helps ya.
I just recently changed my h2o pump and with it came a gasket for the thermostat housing. Bought it at advance auto. they might have a gasket that you can buy seperately.
