I really liked the way this site is set up and the response you get from the fellow members. I just traded my 02 Dodge in on a new 2006 F350 6.0L Ford with 410 gears. My Dodge on Black Friday developed an oil leak while driving home at -25. I lost 9 quarters of oil and damaged a piston. So I waited until the vehicles went on sale and the Ford dealer gave me the best deal and had an F350 with the 410 and I went for it. I did get my wifes permission first. There was two F350's sitting there. One was black, had custom crome trim, 6 speed, heated leather seats, power ever thing, and a six speed transmission. Other other ford was white with gold trim, cloth seats, all power, and an automatic. Well my wife does not do well with shifting gears so I got the white and gold truck. I still think about the Black truck but I am sure she made the right choice. The primary purpose of this new truck will be to tow the new boat that I am having built at Cold Water Boats in Marysville Washington. The boat is going to have twin D-6 Volvo's and will be pretty heavy. I am going to keep records on the Fords performance to let other people know what it will do hauling a 16000lb boat and trailer thru the Alaskan Mountain range. In 1993 I purchase a new 7.3 F250 extended cab to pull a 30ft boat that I just had made. The 7.3 Ford did not have a turbo and had a hard time pulling the boat. Best mileage I got was 16 empty and 8 pulling boat. I traded the 7.3 Ford for a 460 Ford in 1994. The 460 pulled the boat OK but the fuel mileage was not very good. 10 miles per gallon empty. 5 pulling boat. I 1995 I traded the 460 for a new Power Stroke with a turbo. The new ford pulled the boat OK but it seemed to break down all the time. Mileage was 19 empty and 12 pulling boat. The truck lost two transmissions, 1 rear axel, 1 master brake cylinder, and the main glow plug controls went out 3 times. In April of 2002 I was in Anchorage ak my ford had 105000 miles on it and the transmission started slipping. I picked up the local paper and saw that the best deal going was by the Dodge Dealer so I traded the Ford for a Dodge. Here is the facts on the Dodge. The Dodge pulled the boat pretty good but I wanted more power so I put a power box on it. Which made it fun to drive. I pulled another truck out of a river with the Dodge and must of burnt my clutch because when I hooked my boat to the truck I made it 25 miles from my house and lost my clutch. Had to call my friends to get me. At the 49000 mile mark I lost my lift pump. At 52000 miles I lost an injection pump. At 89000 miles I lost another injection pump. At 94000 miles I lost oil pressure and damaged a piston or rod bearing. About two years ago I had to pull my boat and trailer on to a weight scale. Boat on trailer weighted 12400 pounds and trucked weight 8600 pounds. Total rig is 21000 pounds. I am looking forward to a year with no break downs. Thanks again Dennis
Welcome to FTE. That`s a nice write up on your trucks.
I hope you have better luck with this new F350. Pulling the kind of weight I would be tempted to look at a Supercrewzer F650-300 hp/over 800 ft lbs of torque with the Cat engine.
Just don`t ask the cost as I don`t have a clue and wouldn`t even want to guess but it might be the LAST truck you would ever need.
There was a nice low milage late model F650 on Ebay I believe a while back. It was used by a Florida boat dealer and was his personal toy, mint with alot of custom extras. I have no idea what it sold for.
I think the F350 with the 410 will do what I want with pulling the boat up the mountains around Valdez. I have the oportunity to buy a big GMC that is rated at 29000 GVW, has a Cat engine and the guy wants $5000 for it. I have an International 5 ton 1967 four wheel drive linetruck with a gas engine in it that I won at an auction several years ago which could work also. Next week I am going to put in for an abandoned vehicle title on a 1995 F350 that was left on my property when some thieves sold my F150. The Troopers contacted the owner and he said he sold it and hung up so I could end up having 2 F350. That means I will get the 1995 and my wife will get the new one.
I`m sure the F350 will pull the boat up the mountains with no trouble. I hope you do get the 95 F350, too bad about your F150.
Having 2 F350`s would be cool but try to drive the new one once in a while.
Just picked up the new F350 today. So far every thing is good. The speedometer had 39 miles and 52 hours on it. The day I agreed to buy it the was 15 miles on it. The salemen said that the engine check light had come on the the service department had taken care of it. I got home and there was a letter in the mail box was from the service department it stated that they tried to reset the controls on the truck but that did not work. So they did some more tests and found that the turbo was broken and had rusted. They replaced the turbo and everything is working good. I am not sure if I should count that as a break down on my list as I had not picked the truck up yet. I hope that is the only one I have in the first 100000 miles. I put about 70 miles on it today driving at different speeds with the temp being -30. The truck drove good. I will be over 1000 miles by next Monday as I have to make a trip to Valdez to shovel snow off one of my boats. Thanks for the come back Dennis
