I just got my first Ford Truck. It is a 1952, It has a 302 out of an early 80's towncar in it. There is a port on the back of each of the heads that has a hose attached and are currently plugged. What can I do to get rid of the hoses short of getting new heads.
Thanks
You would probably have more responses posting this in the 302 forum...but I can try to answer. Those are smog ports and you can simply find a bolt that fits the threaded hole and plug em up. That is how mine are at least.
if i am not mistaken, those are probably the air injection ports for the smog pump.
not sure on a 302, but they are probably threaded ports. just use a correct size pipe plug to plug the hole with. probably 3/8" NPT pipe plug.
just have a close look to see how the hose is attached to the head. probably a pipe to hose nipple threaded into the head. just unscrew it and go to the local harware store and find correct size plug.
If the heads are off, I take them in and exchange them for other heads. Don't waste money on them. Even the rocker studs are pressed in and use the torque down nuts. If you ever want to install a cam, you'll have to purchase adjustable rocker arm nuts.
If I remember correctly (we say that a lot around here) they are not pipe thread, but a straight (bolt) thread, kind of a queer pitch. I think the air injection attached with a banjo fitting.
Clean the holes with a 1/2" drill bit and install a 1/2" freeze plug. $.50 fix. Been there done that worked fine. Imlowr is right these heads are not the best for performance and if you plan to go fast exchanging them would be wise.
