1990 lighting problem

hey guys.
i was wondering if anyone had any idea what is going on with my b2. The lights dont come on in the right place on the switch, the only way to get them to work is with it halfway between the first and second "click" (running lights and both lights). My dash wont illuminate either. It's getting near inspection time, and i really dont want to fail. I replaced the switch with no luck. The exact same thing is happening. But last night on the way to the movies, the dash illuminated like it is supposed to, but after the movie it was back to nothing. i think i mightve gotten a bad new switch, so ill be trying a second one in the next few days. any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Nosediv Go to your local NAPA store & get a new headlight switch & the pigtail wiring harness for it. 87's through 91's were notorious for this problem. Just changed my third one on my old 91. You'll hafta cut & splice 9 wires to install the new pig tail .... not a problem ... they're all color coded .. just match em back up ... splice & plug the new pigtail into the new switch & you'll be all set.

Mine was an F-250 .... but the problem was the same as your Br2. You may have a different number of wires to splice.

I had a similar problem on my '87 BII and it turned out that a couple of wires were burned and the plastic connector was a little melted. Instead of doing the pigtail thing, I used some quick connect female connectors, some wire, butt connectors, and a new headlight switch. I think the biggest problem with some of these is the way the switch is installed/mounted and the position of the connector. Nearly every Ford I've ever owned had an issue at one time or another with the headlight switch and wiring *shrug*

well i took a trip up to advance auto and bought a new switch. it didnt work, so i figured it couldve been a bad new one. so i went to autozone and got another with still no success. i dont think it is melted wires. i took a piece of wire and started connecting the hot to the other wires and everything works fine that way. the only thing i can think of is if for some weird reason ford changed the wiring for half of the production year so thats why these switches arent working. anymore help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks for of the current help so far.

Trust me, there are loose wiring connections on your wiring harness connector for the switch. I had this very same issue on my '87! They may not have melted badly yet, but they are probably loose enough to cause issues. Another thing that sometimes happens with the switches is the ****/shaft assembly doesn't properly seat when you put it back into the switch. I don't know of any differences in part numbers between models, however, I *just* looked it up, and there are two different part numbers and the transition year for Ranger/BII seems to be 86/87. 86 and prior is one part number and 87-later is another. ODD. I still don't think that the connector / pin pattern could be that much different, though, but anything is possible!

Whereabouts in VB are you? I have seen several different year BIIs in town, and have probably 4-6 BII owners within a block or two of me.
