WIF Sensor - major headache!

I need help fast as my truck is already in the shop. I've had an ongoing problem with the WIF sensor, it started shortly after I bought it in 1/04. At first they drained the fuel and replaced the filters. This didn't solve it. Then they cleaned/replaced the header cover and reprogrammed per a TSB. Now it's happening again and they want to drop the fuel tank. I have a hard time believing that after this many problems with that light, that all of a suddent this time it's because of bad fuel?
Any suggestions?

the fuel header has been changed several times. your tank does not need dropping. just tell them to put a fuel header on it and go from there. just make sure you drain it every couple of weeks.

the header is the piece where the four fuel lines are and the drain plug.

I just that was all considered the HFCM filter and housing... one complete unit (filter, water seperator and heating element to heat the fuel).

Wow... learn something new everyday.

After the dealer called back to say that not only would they have to drop the tank, but now I needed new filters, flushing, etc. the total would be $540! I took a trip down there to see for myself and talked to the tech. He said if it were his truck, he'd just drain the water when needed and save my money.

Like I said, this has been an ongoing problem and I really think it's something else but since the dealer already replaced all the other items noted in the warranty recall, they wouldn't do anything else and kept telling me that I got "bad gas" somewhere.

Getting bad fuel you mean... it is a diesel....

It is quite possible that a lot of water got into your fuel system and unless completely drained it will keep happeing. Think about this way... if you have 1 cup of water or moisrure in your tank and you drain 1 - 3 teaspoons at each filter drain... how many drains will it take you.... A LOT!!!

This is why it is important to use only Racor made fuel filters (Motorcraft or Racor), use diesel fuel additives (helps sperate water so the filter can catch it) and keep your tank filled up... especially in the winter.

If they drained the tank, cleaned it, drained the HFCM filter and changed them both (2 of them)... then I would think you will be fine. Just buy fuel from a different station for a while and see.

Thanks Beachbumcook! Sorry, I'm just the wife who rarely drives the truck and keep forgetting it is a diesel!
Thanks for the tips, I'll be sure to ask for Racor fuel filters during the next oil change and also start using fuel additives. This problem started two years ago when we lived in CA and is still happening here and we live in NC. I just can't believe that this would happen to us three times in two years when we use quality "fuel" stations and not the cheap stuff. But then doesn't it all come from the same place?

it might not be water. we have had alot of corrosion issues with the headers causing the light to come on.
