Well I have a 1988 Ford F150 with a 5.0 that has 150,000 miles thats worn out. The truck has a 7" lift and 35's with a 5 spd. I can get the truck up to 65mph but once i shift into 5th i lose speed. Its got ok get up but once in higher rpms it losses all power almost. I will be swaping a HO 5.0 with shorty headers and a E303 cam. I will be running flowmaster exhaust with turndowns. The motor has 89,000 miles. I am hoping this will help it out with out putting gears in it yet. If I have to do gears I am thinking maybe 3.73 I dont want to low cause its a daily driver to. Hows the motor setup sound to you guys?
You need 4:56+ gears, period. The truck 5.0 motor is pretty gutless and you're killing performance and milage with those tires. Go over to the Windsor engines page and have a snoop around, loads of people building more power. I'll tell you straight up the E cam is not what you want in a truck, you want a short duration high lift cam that builds power from idle up, and to work with the stock computer it has to have a lobe seperation angle of 114deg minimum.
4.56 gears for me is to much I dont need the power to roast the crap out of the tires. As the motor is now its got fine get up and go. So a E303 cam wont work with my computer at all? What will it cause?
just a couple questions but is your 5.0 EFI? do you already have the 5.0 HO? if not and you are running EFI, I highly recommend going to a 5.8 (351W). very minimal work as compared to the 5.0 swap, and quite a bit more power. just my $0.02. thanks again for the help on mine
