Does your truck not have a factory Tach in the Dash?
Since the Diesel Trucks are none-electronic it is very difficult to use a Tachometer designed for spark ignition engines as there is no electronic signal (other than perhaps the altinator).
The factory tach uses a hall effect sensor that is mounted in the oil filler housing on the engine. This factory sensor only works with the factory Tach so.
There are some aftermarket folks that sell Tachs for diesel engines. ISSPRO springs to mind.
Try replacing your sending unit for the old tach. Lots of guys have had trouble with the sending units. As I said before the sending unit is located on the engine oil filler housing (drivers side) It looks like a 1" nut with two wires coming out of it.
There is a way to test the sending unit with an Ohm Meter once you have it out, however; the unit is relatively cheap ($US60) and in most cases a replacement should bring your tach back. You may have to go to Ford to get one so, the last one I bought for my 91 I could only get from Ford.
