Troubleshooting low pressure in-tank fuel pump
Does the '87 Bronco2 2.9l low pressure in-tank fuel pump make the same running noise like the high pressure pump? All I hear when the key is turned on is a click in the tank. I am trying to trouble shoot the in-tank pump best I can before I have to drop the tank.

They should all be the same, etc., and the pump itself shouldn't be that much. It's when you buy the pump and float assembly as one unit that get's expensive (like around $150 or so). Advance/Schuck's/Kragen/Checker sells the in-tank pump kit for around $40-$50. As far as troubleshooting the in-tank pump, you'll want to make sure all of your wiring connections externally and internally are good. The in-tank pump is connected to ground via the wiring harness. You may have to actually drain and drop the tank to check everything. If it's clicking, the pump may have already gone out and will need replacement. Anyone else ever dealt with this?

Unless the low pressure pump has a pressure cutoff switch, it sounds like a high
resistance connection to or from the pump. There isn't much you can see of the tank connector, without dropping the tank. I had to replace the float assembly on my 88,
and the contacts at the tank connector didn't have much longer to go before failing.
There was even copper oxide in the gel between the contacts. And this is not a area
where road salt is used.

http://www.autozone.com/repair_info.htm <-- go here, select your year, make, model and then go to the repair guides. I believe all of the wiring diagrams are in the chassis electrical section, and I believe it's either sheet 1 -or- 4. It has both the connections for the in-tank pump / sending unit assembly right there together.

It might help to get the in-tank assembly before you drop the tank. Looking at the
connections and fittings to it beforehand helped me to reach across the top while
the tank was in place and get the fuel lines disconnected before dropping the tank.
Be careful with the filler tube to the tank, as I dont believe they are being
reproduced yet. If you remove the rear drivers' side wheel, you can see the top of the tank from the side, along with the fill tube on the side.
